My free McAfee is due to expire today and I wondered what free Security there was out there that you techies would recommend please? Something that preferably covers all aspects of security if that's not too much to ask for!

    Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

use AVAST or AVIRA as your main av
Windows firewall is fine, but if you feel you must use another then id recommend COMODO (switch off defense mode and do not use the anti virus part)
    MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner
FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin to stop redirects and web based viruses (or use a SANDBOXIE)

All software is free off 'filehippo'

    I use:

    Microsoft Security Essentials
    Windows Firewall
    Malwarebytes
    Hitman Pro
SuperAntispyware Pro (irrestistible special offer ;) )
    Advanced System Care (antispyware therein)

All free except for peanuts for lifetime SAS Pro.

Tried NoScript, too complicated and intrusive for me :(

He's an importer / retailer and is all over the UK groups, throwing in one liners using his company name as spam !

I wouldnt recommend it. And if you do, make sure its not the full version with the firewall as its less safe than windows firewall

Well I did go with this on a 2 year licence and along with the freebie Malwarebytes, it seems to be functioning fine.

    My only experience so far in this topic ?;
    Avoid McAffee

Not very IT savvy, so is not Microsoft Security Essentials enough or do I have to download everything??

You already have widows [ its part of MSE ] firewall, MSE is enough, but download and keep Malwarebytes handy as a standby in case its needed. If additionally you are using / behind a router you are as safe as you can be.

If you download and install Microsoft Security Essentials from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

it will integrate with Windows Firewall which is built into your Windows operating system :)

What browser do you use? An ad-blocking add-on is advisable.

    For Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

    For Chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom.

Malwarebytes is something to scan with if you hope you've already removed malware, or you think it may have slipped past your antivirus, as a double-check.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    SuperAntispyware Free is self-explanatory:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

    That's your basic protection :)

One caveat: the free programs often ask if you'd like to install Yahoo or IO Bit toolbars on your browser, and the default is Yes (tickbox), so when you're installing them keep your eye open if you don't want your browser invaded. It's not a threat, they're just trying to make a bob or two out of their free gift ;)

Eset have a three month trial on AV or Smart Security on offer to PC Pro readers and ask to pass the details on to any that want it .

    https://www.eset.co.uk/trial/home

Fill details in and use the promo code PCPro311.

This is the only security/AV to constantly over a long period earn the Advance + badge from AV comparatives tests .
