I don't have time to use my computer at all, what with needing a weekly scan using all these tools, it's doing them all 24 hours a day! No viruses yet though which is awesome.0 -

I would say it's minimum for a secure PC.
Lol of course not. I have all those bootcds just for emergencies, and update them yearly. The manual scanners & anti-hijack tools sit on a USB disk if I ever need them. The false positive websites are often useful.
I run Malwarebytes scan every so often, and only run the rest if I suspect I have something, such as when my wife's credit card details were stolen (turned out it was iTunes fault, when thousands were stolen that week).
I just figured someone might find them useful - all great tools, lightweight, and minimally intrusive.0 -
Latest edition of my computer magazine talks about Open DNS for better security, free version blocks phishing. Is it worth using for that?
Have also read on Google's website about their own Public DNS - there's a long bit about security but it's so technical can't understand it, is there are any security advantage to using Googe DNS?
I use Open DNS. I think it's good, though have no technical 'waffle' to back that up reallyIt updates itself regularly and occasionally blocks dodgy sites I happen to stumble across (as does WoT, and FF I think..). Doesn't seem to slow anything down either (possibly speeds up but I haven't studied that really).
Personally I wouldn't go with google, but I have virtually no reason for this: just that feeling that they spy on you and are trying to take over the world :rotfl: I do like google, honestI use their search engine all the time, have a gmail account, and other 'bits', but I feel rather annoyed with them for forcing users to link their Youtube and gmail accounts too. What the heck is that all about!?! Chrome seems popular and people say it's good, and quick, so they've obviously done okay with that, so their DNS may be very good <shrug> (I have Chrome and Opera, but I don't give them much of a chance since I'm so used to FF).
Sorry, waffling now. I just know that OpenDNS is well established, has a good reputation, and I'm happy with their service0 -
I use AVG anti virus and zone alarm firewall.
Also regularly run spybot, CCleaner and super antispyware.
Use firefox for webbrowser.
The best thing you can do is to simply be careful about which sites you visit and what you download. Before downloading and installing anything always google it and do a bit of research to make sure it's safe.0 -
For checking out files before you install or open them, I would recommend http://virusscan.jotti.org which will submit the file to multiple online virus scanners. This significantly improves your chances of avoiding being infected by a virus as many scanners can do detect much more than one.0

Be very very very careful what you ask them to scan, you give them permission to distribute your file worldwide.

I have worked in IT for 15 years and the best security you can have is a daily backup solution for your PC.
AV recommendation: MS Essentials - small footprint, light on resources and free. Gets 4/5 in most reviews
Spyware/Malware: Malwarebytes - small footprint, light on resources and again free version available.
Firewall: from a corporate standpoint hardware in router is the prefered choice. Software wise most free firewall products are good (Zonealarm et al)
Just my opinion though.Yellowlawn
