  • You can have a PC like Fort Knox but care still has to be taken at what sties are visited, don't open dodgy files etc. I know people who do but have others use their PC and end up trashing it up. Phising is another story entirely.

I actually recently installed Ubuntu in VMware player to try it out amongst other things. Linux opearating systems are quite notorius for being very secure, a bit of care still has to be take though as you could act like a kind of immune carrier to infect someone else.

Was the typo unintentional or humourous? Either way, it sums up some of the dodgy sites out there!

If you're running Firefox, get the WOT (web of Trust) add-on. It uses people's recommendations for dodgy sites, and pops up a warning if you try to open something that others think is dodgy. You can always ignore it and go through, but it does provide another line of defence.

Thanks for this one charlie. Been using firefox for years but never knew about this add-on. Looks like a neat tool
  • Personally I use microsoft security essentials, disable scripting in my browser and common sense to avoid infection. I also use the hosts file on windows to block ads.
There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Avast Free ... full scan once a week.
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ... run once a week.
Keepass with Firefox addon for securely storing user names and passwords .... I only recently realised that browsers store these in plain text!

And most important common sense when using the internet ... don't blindly download and install things!
  • Microsoft Security Essentials, that's all that's needed.

Actually it's not. You also need at least a firewall (and common sense).

And then it would help to have something to stop dodgy scripts running if you preview a dodgy message by mistake. And also something to scan / manage malware would make your computer more secure. The list goes on...

I thought it would be interesting to know what security people use (and how successful or not!). I'm assuming that giving this info doesn't put security at risk - perhaps someone could say if it does!

I use 1) Firewall inbuilt in router
    2) Sygate firewall is on computer in case of router failure but I turn it off when logged on.
    3) Microsoft firewall turned off
    4) Avast antivirus
    5) Spywareblaster
    6)Prevx Intrusion prevention
    7) Ewido - not full version which has expired & you have to pay for.

Everything seems fine at the moment. (I recently changed set up as I was getting a few viruses and trojans.)

Linux. Why worry about security (and pay to worry about it) when you can get more secure online for free?

Testing out MSE on the old Vista machine, but Avira had a winter sale and another year of Antivir Premium (Antispyware on top of AV and faster scanning) was only £12.30, so for that price what the heck, I stuck with them here on the Win7 PC.
  • AV - Avira (Free Version)
    Firewall - Look N Stop
Anti-Malware/Spyware - Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes (Free Version), SuperAntiSpyware (Free Version) and Spybot.

    That'll do!
