  • Over the years I have spent hours running spyware removal tools etc and still managed to lose a computer after a friend of mine visited one website !!!

I work in IT and currently have the following:

    Firewall on router.
    AVG Free on PC.
PC harddrive is partitioned in to 2.
1st partition has Windows and apps on
2nd partition has my music, documents etc.
Having the drive partitioned means most nasties will attack the Windows area, which I can wipe and reinstall with out losing my own stuff.
I also have a 500GB external drive I use for backup. (I only have it plugged when doing the backup)

BUT the main thing is: I am very careful which sites I go to and most of the time I search for the site in google etc to see what is said before I go to it.

A good thing to look into is if the company you work for can provide anything. A lot of the large companies like the one I work for have deals with Microsoft etc and sometimes you can use software at home that you use in the office and it doesn't cost you anything or at most you pay for postage for the CD\DVD.
I recently received Office 2010 Professional for 17 quid from work and will soon have Mcafee installed for free :)

Another good application is CCleaner (yes it's 2 C's). This was recommended to me by a Microsoft employee. Search in for CCleaner and make sure you pick the link that is Piriform.com.
The software cleans redundant and suspicious files\cookies from your PC. When I ran it 2 weeks ago I recovered 600MB of space on my hard drive.
  • I also use a few different applications to fight those nastys out there. They are:

    Windows Firewall
    McAfee (built into my router)
    McAfee security on PC
    AML Registry Cleaner
    CCleaner
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I also have a shortcut on my desktop to Adobe - Flash Player Settings Manager - Website Storage Settings panel to clear out all my saved websites which do not get cleared when you delete the Temp sites via Tools - Internet Options

I run Win XP on my PC and have a 320GB hard drive which I backup every few weeks onto a 500Gb removeable hard drive. Every now and again I pick up nastys but generally my PC runs without any bugs detected. :rotfl:

Chances are you have other security running thats conflicting

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log in a NEW thread so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

Post a link to your new thread here

I have a BSD laptop, it's so secure I have trouble compiling stuff on it myself ;)

But if flexrider is using a virtual box to use windows it can be pretty secure even unpatched

I've got BSD on my Win 7 in Virtual Box, all I could do to get it to load properly (3 attempts), now I can just about get it to update. ;)
