  • Lastest AVG free

    Mareabytes antispyware
NoScript free web browser plug-in, IMO really good, you can block or allow any script from any website/domain as you wish (by default everything blocked = you dont get infected by visiting sites or pop ups) prevention better than curing (it blocked some really nasty stuff in the past, when I visited a site I use often that got infected).

I've just had to completely restore my system due to a virus. I've just downloaded Avast but wonder what else I need? My sons tend to go on lots of random websites and manage to get a virus every few months :( I really want to tighten my security up a bit.

I would suggest Sandboxie - it's easier to manage and much lighter on resources than a virtual machine. Ideal solution for kids blundering around the net....check it out.
  • Steve Bass (who is a highly respected blogger from before the term was invented) has written a piece on why he replaced Kaspersky with Norton after avoiding them for almost 2 decades. The article is here

BTW, his pieces are worth reading for all sorts of things. He's been writing on computing since he helped form the Pasadena IBM User Group in 1983, including a long stint at CNet

  • Avast! and PC Tools Firewall Plus. Does the job for me, and it's all free. :)

I always recommend not to use norton as it does the strange things to my pc and would always recommend Spyware doctor with antivirus although it does cost £20 per year :(
  • trying out Bullguard just now on a free trial, so far really good!

I would go for Avast and paid-for MalwareBytes -- it's a one-off payment and lifetime product! Leave Windows Defender on too and your windows firewall.
