I use AVG Internet Security 9.0 and Pc Firewalls Plus, works a treat :@)

The firewall in version 5 was very good

AVG is very poor with malware and is a resource hog

Id scan with malwarebytes to be on the safe side if I were you

  • Hi

Setting up a new laptop and reviewing the set-up on my PC.

What's the current wisdom on security? After reading through some of the posts I was thinking:
    Avira
Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot S+D with immunise feature (what's the difference between these?)
Windows firewall (I've tried PC Tools before and had problems)

My browser of choice is Chrome.

Also is there a good site or topic which tells you which things you can deselect from MSCONFIG? Anything else you can do to speed up boot-up times / normal running

Lastly is there a single programme out there which i can use to remove stuff, specifically Norton at this moment in time.

    Sorry for all the questions.

    Thanks for your help.

I personally would say ESET Smart Security Suite is the best. The best Anti-virus other than ESET would be Avast. Norton is hopeless and I've had to deal with loads of infected PC's that have Norton. When I installed ESET to their PC's there was no more issues.

Draytek Firewall routers offer a high level of custom features to block things. Before I had a Netgear Firewall router which was useless in its security. Draytek are more expensive than Netgear, but you only get what you pay for.

P.S. Don't use multiple Antivirus, Firewall and Spam blocking software. Just stick with 1 you find the best with the best features. Ensure the "User Account Control" is switch on if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Don't open up strange emails. Don't visit strange websites.

In the Draytek router you can block various files types via the internet like script files and .exe files. You can even set your own rules. Its my line of first defense.

    Yes, and it's rubbish!
  • Is anyone else here using McAfee virus scan?

I'm absolutely pulling my hair out with it!

Everytime i visit a page with a shopping cart, a form to fill out or even the option to log in - my entire screen freezes and goes into meltdown.

It doesn't happen everytime but when it does it's very annoying!

This is the last page it happened on was Quotebofin comparison site.

I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but I actually think this made the problem worse :(

Anyone else had a similar issue or got any advice?

    Thanks :)
