I have been running Mac OS X on Mac mini for a few months now and the feeling of security is very calming. I don't fear, and indeed don't get, viruses anymore!

RIGHT CLICK the spybot.exe file and select RUN AS (administrator)
if the options not there then press the SHIFT key at the same time as right clicking

Then after updating, goto the immunise screen and select to immunise

It should then gardually go down to zero unprotected

Many thanks Rik for your brilliant advice as usual... :A

I've just followed the above, and mine has now gone from 15,693 unprotected to zero! :T

I've learned so much from reading this thread, and would be lost without it!

You techie bods are all little :A's

I thought it would be interesting to know what security people use (and how successful or not!). I'm assuming that giving this info doesn't put security at risk - perhaps someone could say if it does!

I use 1) Firewall inbuilt in router
    2) Sygate firewall is on computer in case of router failure but I turn it off when logged on.
    3) Microsoft firewall turned off
    4) Avast antivirus
    5) Spywareblaster
    6)Prevx Intrusion prevention
    7) Ewido - not full version which has expired & you have to pay for.

Everything seems fine at the moment. (I recently changed set up as I was getting a few viruses and trojans.)

I now use a dual boot machine with Linux on one partition and windows 7 on the other partition PLUS an external hard disk (wish I had done this YEARS ago!!) together with a wireless router with built in firewall (from what I can remember).
I PREFER using Linux because I don't need any more virus protection. They can't get to the root directory at all,...simple!!

When I DO need to use windows (rarely) I tend to use Firefox NOT explorer and have downloaded AVG free antivirus. ALthough I am going to evaluate another not so well known free antivirus software called CLamAV for windows.
(just for the record, when I used to BUY anti virus software I was lucky enough to have friends who were IT professionals and I soon learnt that locating lesser known anti virus software, like NOD32 and ClamAV was better because no one else knows about it,....which is better. NOD32 is superb and FAR superior to Norton or McAfee. ANd No I dont work for them!!)

In Linux I also use firefox or Epiphany. Both of which are brilliant and FREE to use in Linux. If I had the money, I would buy a Macintosh and use Mac OSx. Macs are FAR superior to ANY PC out there and will ALWAYS be better than Windows based machines. Their operating system is based upon Unix, an operating system used by the Cray computer systems which are used behind the scenes in government departments, as well as space centres world wide. Thus, are never susceptible to malicious network based virus's at all.

My external hard disk is used to store ALL my documents, music, photographs and data. I never now store anything on my PC at all. and I always disconnect this hard drive whenever I go into windows. I just do NOT trust windows at all!!

I did all this over a year ago now and have had no problems since using Linux. Of course a Mac would simply be heaven!!! :D

Linux is also based on Unix.

  • Hi,

After having purchased virus checking software in the past - and fed up about re-subscribing and paying every year I now totally rely on the 3 FREEware applications above to manage my home wireless network. Should I be scared?!

PS: Did have a recent Trojan which was captured seemingly successfully and put into the virus vault by Avg.
    Any thoughts? Cheers D

Good resource here, or start a new thread and someone better at Windows than me will help you out. They are very very good.
