At the moment I'm without any security. If you know what you are clicking on Internet, know what you are downloading then it's hard to get virus. Only if you are target of someone.

Most people thinks that virus is all what slow down your computer. That's not true. If you install program which take 50% CPU Usage than it's your fault. It's not virus, just greedy program.

It's smart you are all using protection as antivirus, firewall, etc.. but do not just install it and leave it. Configure it for your usage. It can be very greedy...

    :rotfl:How greedy? Cookie monster greedy...:rotfl:

But seriously whiskey, why would you want to be without any security?

Completely wrong. An infected website would infect your computer instantly. Then youve the email system, facebook apps etc etc

Any program could potentially eat up CPU power. But a trojan has the ability to completely kill an operating system (Ive seen it MANY times)

I am running Linux and thought I was just using built in iptables as a firewall and an email scanner so I did not inadvertently forward something nasty to a windows user. but running updates the other day I discovered I had clamAV running as a default anyway. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClamAV I may even try to put it on my BSD lappie as it doesn't seem to use a lot of resources.

BSD, Linux, Sun Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, AIX, HP-UX what exactly are the risks involved in using them without security software?

Thats patently stupid, even if you know the website you're visiting is safe doesn't mean it is. This site is safe and was hacked not long ago probably targeting silly people with no security that make silly assumptions.

90% of the time slow computers are down to viruses/spyware/trojans/etc, 90% of the rest its down to start up programs.

Clamav I believe provides the email scanner so thats why you have it, its good at its job.

Theres fewer risks because of the inbuilt security, dont assume you're not using security with them you are its just not as overt as with windows. You're using them because of their inbuilt security and even then its recommended you use a firewall with them.

Nearly all Deb and all Ubuntu derivatives have a built in firewall.

No you need to turn it on and some distros have no GUI so you have to set it from terminal. Or download an alternative.
