Router firewall, Norton AV, ZoneAlarm Free. Am going to ditch last two for something better.

BTW is there a way to test the effectiveness of a securirty setup? Any progs or websites? Have tried Shields Up at GRC and it says my ports are all "Stealth". But I don't know how comprehensive the tests are on that site, or even what they're for exactly.

grc test just really is testing yr router not really doing much else. i wud take it off then do a good test.

Comodo Time Machine is the disaster recovery software that I use, you can download it from
http://www.comodo.com/home/data-storage-encryption/data-recovery.php or just go for a read up on it first. Totally free. But a warning if you are going to use it make sure that your PC is free of virus/malware etc. first. Recover from any virus, malware, rootkit in fact anything just by rebooting. This should be used in conjunction with whatever you are running now and if anything does get through it is instant recovery to a clean state.

Thanks for reply. Please would you explain "take it off then do a good test". Don't understand, am new to this. Thanks

sry im bad at explaining things but ment disable the firewall on the router by going into its settings an disable it then run a test from grc, this will then do a test against yr zonealarm software instead of the routers firewall hoping :)
This can get abit hard if your new to it all though.
  • i use zonealarm firewall, spyware doctor with anti virus and privacy guardian.. all good imo :)

About to get a new pc with Windows 7. Does this include any security with it?
Am thinking of downloading a free one such as Avast, AVG etc. once it's up and running - or do I need to install one BEFORE I go online?

avira has been shown to work better than avast and avg, it does have the occasional pop up(about one a day)

google gizmo freeware anti virus for more details , i am not allowed to post a link!
