I shall read up on Threatfire and decide if it is worth having it or not.

Thanks for both of your help and advice.

I do use it myself as it doesnt appear to slow the computer down any and works perfectly well with all the others

  • hi just wondering if anyone could advise me as to whether my current programs are sufficient:

    Comodo firewall
    Avast Antivirus
    Spybot S+D

Craig ~ your using 2 resident (on the fly) scanners
    AVG and AVAST

Right click AVG and shut it down
Then remove it using the 32bit removal tool
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

    reboot

and add these next 3 to your list
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
    UPDATE and PERFORM COMPLETE SCAN

Download CCLEANER (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ make sure YAHOO TOOLBAR is unticked on installation)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the top 2 scans (Untick COOKIES ~ Backup the registry when it asks)

When using firefox id also advise using NOSCRIPT with it
    NOSCRIPT
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

NOSCRIPT works by blocking ALL website scripts (Which is how dodgy websites infect your computer ~ the easiest way to catch a virus after downloading). So you need to UNLOCK all websites you use for them to work properly (Like this one for example)
I personally set it so that it DOESNT show messages about blocked scripts. Then all you need to do is use common sense. Think to yourself 'does the site work ok'? If so it doesnt need touching. But if you wanted to watch a video on youtube say, youd need to unlock parts of it. Look bottom right, If theres ANY red on the 'S' symbol, then something is being blocked.

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Probably an antivirus like avast and some antispywar like superantispyware, PCTools was asking whether you wanted a certain program to do what it was trying to do, its worth paying attention to it cos it could be trying to do something you wouldn't want it to do.

  • Hi!

I've been installing protection on my new pc & I've come across a problem with PC Tools firewall.

It won't install on the 64-bit Vista I use , can you suggest another suitable firewall?

I've got the Netgear wireless router/modem firewall & the Vista one running. I've also installed Avira, Adaware, Spybot, Spywareblaster & SuperAntiSpyware!

Also some advice/reassurance on what I have already installed would be much appreciated.

Oh and one other thing, I use Firefox with No-Script & WOT as add-ons.
