But if you tailor your cv to suit the job you are applying for Horace then there would be less reason for you to be having knockbacks.
Your post comes across as incredibly snobbish, saying you are only going to apply for jobs over a certain income. Its a buyers market out there and only the strong survive.
This is exactly the reason I stopped posting so much, you see although I have trawled the halls of Academia, and have a degree, I am not an academic. I am thankful to have my job in the local village shop. And it is most certainly below those magic figures that you posted, and while I do aspire to earn more, and am definitely over qualified for retail. A job is a job and with so many fighting for every position advertised, I am very grateful to be where I am.
Patronising much, is how I found the income comments.
I will refrain from saying any more.0 -
Wow Groatie - bet you are glad that all those coombes are clear for plumbers to guddle about in. Fingers crossed the joint get sorted soon.
An interesting take on Horaces post fantasia, you see I understood it differently.
What I heard was someone getting more focussed in their job hunt, to get laser sharp in narrowing down what they are looking for both geographically and financially.
What I heard was someone who has been applying for "everything" and getting nowhere fast deciding to be proactive in trying a different tack and getting super focussed on finding a career move that offers a perfect fit for their skill-set.
Its kind of a "if you ask for anything you get nothing, if you are specific then you get your request" principle that I came across in networking that I have found to be true elsewhere.
What I heard was someone, keeping on keeping on, not someone being patronising, just someone being quite factual and businesslike, someone who still believes a decent career is out there for them if they only turn over enough stones to get there.
But I guess that is the challenge with our communication - the real result is in the understanding of the person being communicated to, not the intention of the person doing the communicating.
oops - look at the time - better go get DS1 from school

Hi Fantastia
The wage levels for similar jobs do vary across the country. In London, where I live we have some of the highest wages - but also the highest housing costs. On the Matrix thread we each have very different job histories, current and future needs.
Considering both of those things I think it's fair enough for Horace to set a minimum target for a new job. I know that I would also be looking for a minimum of 18k too - this would be both to meet my outgoings and also would reflect the current market rates of pay in London.
I think it's strange for you to have taken this everyday post by Horace so personally. She is in no way denigrating your job by saying that she's looking for a salary around this figure.
I am slightly puzzled by your comments about academia as I didn't think that was Horace's area.
And what I really know is that Horace would be thankful for any job too. She has been trying very hard to get a job and has pursued various strategies and is at college at the moment. It is very hard to be unemployed and we all might react in different ways. I think you might be reading this post out of context.
Best wishes

I actually do tailor my CV for every job that I apply for, but there is only so much that I can do to dumb it down. I have to earn a decent wage to keep a roof over my head - I do not want to be receiving benefits and the whole idea of getting a job that pays tnat means that I would be able to get off benefits altogether. for good. I am sorry if you think I appear to be snobbish but really I am not - I also have to consider how I would get to work too because of mitigating factors, again this is not snobbish but practical. In an ideal world, I would be married to a millionaire and running my own business but I am not and my own business has fallen by the wayside due to the recession. I do not have a husband to support me nor do I have huge pot of money to tap into - all my money went into my business and I was left with nothing.:mad:0 -
Phew! Leak sorted, boiler pressure is sorted, plumber is paid and drips are being wiped off the bedroom ceiling every so often using cloths tied to a long handled brush. I was a bit leery of where the cat was, but she is safe in the neighbours' garden - she doesn't like strange men in the house.
There are now no gaps where she could get under the floorboards from the eaves, but a previous cat had to be recued through the plasterboard wall on the opposite side of the house when she had got under the upper floor and couldn't find her way back. Shortly after I got the wall fixed, my ex-husband had to break through the wall at the same place all over again when I was away for the weekend - he had left the eaves door open and the cat (not the brightest of felines) did it again! I got the eaves properly insulated after that, which filled in the cat-magnet gaps.
Tomorrow I have an appointment with the solicitor to get him to explain to me why the quotation for the purchase of my new house is 14% higher than last year, and the search fees have increased by 100%. I have last year's quote in black and white, should be an interesting conversation! If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

I have just spent a magical hour engrossed in some perfectly wonderful writing on one of my favourite blogs - about a place I used to live in.

Don't use them Igamogam... mostly because I keep hearing similar comments from others. I'm sticking with a building society thanks... although credit unions do appeal
Just realised that if I'm going to see a consultant tomorrow I'll have to wash my hair. I was putting it off until after the sawdust was gone as the bathroom appears to be affected too... I'll have to find some clean respectable clothes too! And make sure I clean my teeth EXTRA well... like I do for the dentist0 -
Igamogam - I am so going to be billing you for the tea I just sprayed all over my laptop :rotfl::rotfl:
