I didn't see it MG, but I think there are a lot of things that we take for granted and don't appreciate. I know people are very quick to criticise the NHS, for example, and while it isn't perfect, it is good to remember what the alternatives are.

On another positive note, my bonus and payrise confirmation arrived at 2.30am via email... so they were there for me to pick up when the alarm went off at 6am. I have checked the maths and I'm very happy :) It means I can afford to finish the work I have started on the house and will also be able to save. So I need to decide whether to get a new ISA or pay into the existing one...

I didn't watch that one MG but I did watch 'Protecting Our Children' which was very upsetting. Every child deserves to be loved and properly cared for. I felt quite emotional when I looked at my 2 all snuggled up in bed.

What a lovely start to your day, greenbee! Well done :)

I saw it too MG and felt much the same way - really felt for the people lined up at night to see the medical teams and the man with the hernia. Thank God for the NHS.

Got to get going today for tomorrow we holiday:T and I want house and school stuff in reasonable state before we head off.
    Mortgage £119,533 going down slowly

Yep, thank God for the NHS. And every time we hear about (and envy) the seemingly large pay checks of our Americal counterparts let's remember that they pay everything after they get it (health care, pensions etc.). So what is left is not actually that much.

I didn't watch the programme - we can only get BBC News here - but I read about it on the BBC website. Heartbreaking! I still believe that in the US, exactly because there is no welfare state, a different mechanism (benefaction) has developed. Not enough but still...

Makes it worth it changing our perspective a bit as well: from our personal situation to the broader issues of poverty (real one, not 'I can't have the latest iPhone' kind), deprivation, inequality etc. Shift away from our prevailing consumerist mentality (let's consume as much as possible at the best cost) to moderation and mutual support.

May sound naive but this is how I have been feeling for sometime now; and this is why most of what I write on my blog is about raining in cosumption and generating value rather than coupons, deals and the like.

  • Woohooo!!! think I have sorted the Blog Gremlins - check out what I made for Valentines Day for the kids.

The sweetest Valentines day "Jammie Dodgers" ................ even better, I only "tested" the one and the rest found their way into lunchboxes and over to the Playgroup first thing.

    Happy Day everyone

In total agreement with you. We consume too much of everything almost as if it is a right.

I didnt watch Panorama either as I was watching something about Afghanistan. I think that we have much to be grateful for, however. I know that I am a regular user of the NHS and was dreading the cost of new glasses and now with some recycling of a set of frames and the use of some NHS vouchers (I get them because my prescription is complicated) - I can now have two pairs of specs for free - I have had to have new reading glasses and the voucher cost covers them in their entirety:j Alas, I do not have an NHS dentist as mine sees private ones unless I was a student at the Uni and then I wouldnt have to pay - so I havent been to the dentist for 12 months because I cannot afford it.

I would like the Matrixettes to send positive vibes - my parents have put an offer in on the house to include kitchen appliances and subject to survey (they are only 4 months old) so now we are playing the waiting game. I can sell my freezer and possibly the washing machine although I had thought of leaving the washing machine in the flat because it is awkward to move and it is old and wearing out. Mum pointed out that there was carpet in the toilet - she and I both hate that, however, she did say that I didnt have a man in the house to dribble everywhere:eek::rotfl: That can be changed on an as and when basis - when I can afford it.

I must stop buying stuff - books bought today from charity shop - one hardback cost me £2.95 and the paperback was free although marked at £1.95. 2 magazines bought today as well The Lady because I like the adverts in there and I couldnt get away with reading it in the shop and a copy of Amateur Gardening because it had a pack of seeds on the front worth more than the magazine itself therefore bargainous but it is full of tips that I will need. A few more things were bought for the store cupboard too.

Decided that I need to get some meths and will get this at the hardware shop because it is too expensive in the car spares place - I need it to clean the windscreen both inside and out because it is the only way to cut through the grease so that it can be cleaned properly. It was a bit blurry driving to the village today - partly due to windscreen and partly due to the need for new glasses:eek:
  • Happy vibes for the house Horace - btw, measure up the bathroom cos you can bet someone on here will have some tile(me) laminate (me) or Karndean (me) going spare.

    Everything has a solution

Aww happy Valentines Day to all. The Jammie Dodgers sound so nice MG. I didn't see the Panorama programme, and I will definitely look it up. I am so worried about the privatisation of the NHS, I never want there to be a situation here where people who need medical help can't access it. There is this campaign to try to stop the current bill going through in its current form if anyone is interested.

Forgive me all, but I am just so sad at the moment. I am not sure if it's just a crash from so much PhD work, or if I am upset that my Gran is unwell. I just feel the tears bubbling up from nowhere when I'm not looking. Motivation for even everyday things is at an all-time low. I am not sure what to do to shake myself out of it. Goodness knows, I have no right to feel like this as some people have an awful lot more to face.

I think you have just run into a wall - much as FW did after coming on sabbatical and as I did after becoming DF.

Concentrate on being kind to yourself and taking care of Gran - all the rest can wait until sunnier days and sprouting seeds raise our serotonin levels - this too shall pass.

Just noticed Mr Martin in the header "Jussshht call me Bond, shhhaavvings Bond":rotfl:
