I've used my contactless Barclays debit card in Boots and on Stagecoach buses in Liverpool, amongst other places (staff canteen included!) - Liverpool is a trial city along with London. The contactless cards are offline debit cards (the ones that used to have a cheque gurantee limit), these begin 4539 and 4659. Cashcard accounts and people with Barclays Bank Accounts who don't qualify for this card get given a full authorisation card without the contactless feature, these are the debit cards that didn't have the cheque gurantee facility and these begin 4658.

Anyone who has a contactless card and doesn't want it can downgrade to the full authorisation card, you need to go in to the branch and ask to downgrade to the Connect (Electronic) card.

Anyone who wants a contactless card can upgrade over the phone, if they have the limits available, or in branch if they are a full application customer. If you have no limits then you can't upgrade.

Ok, thanks. By south of England do you mean London?

No. I'm not going to say where as it's not really my place to do so :)

How old do you have to be to get one of these? I really want to get one and so far I have had no luck despite several banks now offering them.

I opened a silver current account with Lloyds (£6.50 a month and has benefits over the classic account) and specifically requested a contactless card. I did not get one. After many phone calls and emails I now have a collection of four (yes 4!) standard Visa debit cards, not contactless.

    http://www.lloydstsb.com/debit_cards/contactless_debit_cards.asp

It says on their site you can just ask in branch to get one, however none of the staff at the two branches I have visited even know what a contactless card is and claim they don't exist.

Recently I opened an account with Barclays as I have read that they automatically give out these cards to all new customers. I was less than excited when I opened the envelope to find that I did not get one. After a big rant in a branch earlier today I closed the account.

So has anyone on here actually managed to get one of these or are they a thing of myth? I only ask as I've heard so much about them and I'm desperate to get one but it seems I just can't. I saw a guy in Mcdonalds a few days ago with a Barclays debit card which looked like the one I had except his had the Visa paywave logo on it. He tapped it on the card reader and it paid automatically. I told him I thought it was awesome and asked how he got it, he said it was sent to him without him even asking.

What the hell can I do?

Reclusive46 sibling got a lloyds tsb contactless card at the age of 16.

Barclays refuse to issue me with a non-contactless card.

I can't remember the last time I lost cash, only a couple of months ago Barlays made a clear mistake costing me money - they agreed instantly. 3 hours on the phone to deal with it, that is a record minimum of time, normally its days.

Why should I be forced to accept something inherently flawed. But it is ok they can only steal £15 at a time.

They catch alot of people cloning cards when they come to pick up their equipment i.e the dodgy reader and/or camera to store your card and pin its expensive kit. Now you just need a modified mobile "forgotton" amongst the confectionery display to read your card and save its details.

I've found banks and mobile phone companies to offer the worst service and yet we are giving them even more trust.

I use Oyster daily and its scams me often on N.Rail - not so on the tube.

I cannot believe people want this, must be facebook users :-)

    There is a work around..
  • Barclays will always refund fraudulent transactions, regardless if it's a contactless transaction or not. There are fraud prevention mechanisms in places for contactless transactions too, if the card is used in quick succession then you will need to enter your PIN before you can do any more contactless transactions.

You shouldn't have been refused a non-contactless card, you were given incorrect information. As I stated above, if you go into any branch and request to downgrade to the a Connect (Electronic) card then you will be sent one out in the post.

My HSBC Advance debit card is contactless :p

Did you have to request a contactless card or was it automatically issued?

    Regards

Thanks, I asked (not at a branch though) they said no. For my CC I asked Barclaycard and they said no.

The problem which I didn't explain well, is who is prepared to go through teh hours it takes for Barclays to fix a problem. The staff at the Branch are great but when I hear you have to call HO I give up.

Anyway no problem I've disabled the aerial on the card doesn't work anymore as contactless. Just need to find aerial on CC.

Well I'm biased as I work in the contact centre and we do a pretty good job most of the time. We can do most things on the phone that you can do in branch, downgrading your card is one of the things a branch can do only though.

Is there any plans to start issuing contactless card to basic bank account customers of Barclays at all? (question on behalf of my brother lol)

As Barclays is the issuer of the orange contactless card, I wont see why there not able to issue them on basic bank accounts.

Had a look on HSBC's website and can't see any mention of the above debit card. Is it a UK account, as they have them issued in other countries with HSBC.
