Contactless debit cards

How old do you have to be to get one of these? I really want to get one and so far I have had no luck despite several banks now offering them.
I opened a silver current account with Lloyds (£6.50 a month and has benefits over the classic account) and specifically requested a contactless card. I did not get one. After many phone calls and emails I now have a collection of four (yes 4!) standard Visa debit cards, not contactless.

It says on their site you can just ask in branch to get one, however none of the staff at the two branches I have visited even know what a contactless card is and claim they don't exist.
Recently I opened an account with Barclays as I have read that they automatically give out these cards to all new customers. I was less than excited when I opened the envelope to find that I did not get one. After a big rant in a branch earlier today I closed the account.
So has anyone on here actually managed to get one of these or are they a thing of myth? I only ask as I've heard so much about them and I'm desperate to get one but it seems I just can't. I saw a guy in Mcdonalds a few days ago with a Barclays debit card which looked like the one I had except his had the Visa paywave logo on it. He tapped it on the card reader and it paid automatically. I told him I thought it was awesome and asked how he got it, he said it was sent to him without him even asking.
What the hell can I do?

I also saw this on the Lloyds website and went to the branch who didn't know anything about it. The manager went away and told me that it was a pilot - assume in London branches? There are times when parenthood seems nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you Peter De VriesDebt free by 40 (27/11/2016)0

Both my Barclays Debit Card and Barclaycard are Contactless and have been for at least 2yrs, I didn't ask for them its just what was sent to me when my old cards expired; but have never used them once contactlessly, don't ever recall seeing anywhere I could use them.0

McDonalds and Pret use it, and at the O2 Dome Barclays were giving away Tennis balls to use the facility..0

I would not be too bothered about a contactless card if I were you. I use my Barclaycard for all my purchases and as far as I can recall the only places I have been able to use the contactless feature have been in McDonald's and Pret A Manger (Amounts under £15). Unless you frequent either of these establishments the contactless feature will offer little in the way of extra convenience.
I know that the Oxford branches of these shops offer the contactless feature but am unsure if it is a nationwide scheme for either. All the best.Money is a wise mans religion0 -
My new Barclaycard is contactless - although I have yet to use it.
If you're not eligible for a bank account that does one, you could always get one of these: http://cash.orange.co.uk/what/Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
You really want one ? Why ?0

Like you, I'm just awaiting (dreading rather) the threads on MSE once these things start to be commonplace....you can just see it: "My bank debited my contactless card - but I didn't make any purchase".
As per the poster above, my Barclays debit card has had the facility for some time now.0 -
Orange offer a prepaid debit card with contactless technology. However as a prepaid card there are some fees attached. I've never seen anywhere to use mine.0

I tried to buy a bottle of water in LA Fitness but they told me that I have to buy 6 bottles, because of the minimum payment.0
