No in order to spend £15 you would have to make sure you have the £15 credit on your pre-paid card.
    Isn't contactless technology offline ?

No Barclays do have a basic bank account that has a contactless debitcard.

In fact they also have a two basic bank accounst the other is the Barclays cash account that comes with a normal debit card.

A straightforward basic account offering you everything you'd expect from Barclays.
    No monthly fee
Contactless debit card to make payments easier and faster (subject to status)

Ahhh my mistake. Thought it was the barclays cashcard account that was being referred to here.

I had the opposite argument with Barclays - trying to get a card that was NOT contactless!

They wouldn't accept the fact that the only place I've seen with a suitable reader is McDonalds (which I never visit), so I prefer the additional security of C+P for my transactions. I don't want some thief reading my card details wirelessly.

    Same here.

Barclays gave me an option, I said I'd prefer to not have it, yet they tried to persuade me, but I got one without, my Barclaycard has it however.

I just don't think they're neccessary or entirely safe tbh. Imagine being knocked in a busy Mcdonalds and paying for someone else's Big Mac by mistake.

I am sure it is quite the opposite. A basic bank account does not support a debit card with the 'contactless' technology !!
You would have thought, but thats what it says when I sign in, and thats the card I've got.

You would have to be knocked pretty hard for that to happen, considering the card has to be within 6cm of the reader for it to work.

Just for reference the account I opened was the current account plus, the one with the small monthly fee, the website also states you get a contactless card with it. I had also read on t'internet that they give these out by default to all new customers.

However I didn't get one and the woman in the branch said it was a different type of card (can't remember exactly what she said) and not a fully featured one. I had no idea what she was talking about but apparently I was not eligible for a contactless card because of my credit score - and she put it down to my age. I was unaware you needed an excellent credit rating (mine is far from bad anyway, I've never done anything wrong) in order to have a card which is no different except that you can make some chip and pin payments without entering your pin, but she said that's just the way it is. So I acted like a man and closed my account right there and then.

Also thanks to the people who gave the link to that Orange money card, I have bought one of those now, seems to be a good deal. £10 one off, top it up for free via debit card, it's contactless and can't go overdrawn. Perfect for trips to Mcdonalds and local shops! :)

According to the Visa paywave website, there are 69 places which accept contactless payment within a 2 mile radius of my post code.

    4 Co-op stores
    Subway, Caffe Nero, Mcdonalds
    Loads of corner shops
  • All my cards are contactless.

    Barclays Premier Debit Card
    Barclaycard
    American Express Gold

Just back home from Finland with work and they have contactless technology everywhere - supermarkets, newsagents, hotels - you name it!

The UK is yet again far behind in technology!

What happens when your wallet/purse etc. gets within range of a charge point ? Can you nominate which card will be active for the specific transaction ? Do your cards interfere with each other in their wireless nature ?

If more than one card is in range of the reader, no card is used.
