Me neither ! Don't see the appeal really, how long does it take to use a PIN ? It's just another system to go wrong ! Some people just like to have the latest gadgets though don't they ?

I can't help but wonder if they wanted to remove the need for a pin for lower cost transactions just let people insert the card into the machine, show "approved, remove card" on the display and be done. No new hardware needed and if the amount is higher than £10 then ask for the PIN. If more than PIN-less transactions per day, request the PIN, etc. Why go for contactless where people can download the information off your card whilst its in your pocket.

I have two Barclaycards, a Visa and a Mastercard. The couple of places in which I have used the contactless system have allowed me to use both cards. This leads me to believe that if a retailer has a contactless terminal then any card which they accept can be used to make a contactless payment. I hope that this helps. All the best.

    Thank you very much

As mentioned before apart from it having the contactless technology it can be used on a plane and a train, like the old 3 in one card, cheque guarantee card. where as the other debit card (4658) won't. Same card given on the basic cash account.

Not seen the contactless sign that much though.

Agreed contactless transactions are definitely offline. Can sometimes take upto 4 or 5 days for a pret contactless transaction to show up.
  • for LTSB minimum age is 18 and only avaliable in certain areas and certain accounts and since my account isn't eligible despite being in the pilot area :(

    If you really want one,
    Orange Cash prepaid card
    Paypal Access prepaid card
    Barclaycard

Barclays you have to be 18 and only on Current Account Plus, Barclays Bank Account and Additions Plus

    Though contactless is so useful
    especially @ Nandos :D

I could not agree with you more. People also need to think how many transactions nowadays are below £15 - not many. If you take your family to McDonald's that will almost invariably cost in excess of £15. As for Pret A Manger it would be difficult to feed two adults there for less than £15. Contactless payments are just a gimmick which seems to have got some people very excited. All the best.

I have the silver account with Lloyds, and I had the current account plus with Barclays. I am 22 years old and neither bank will give me one. I can't even get an overdraft with Lloyds, I'm not going to bother trying to apply for a credit card for a few years.

Thanks, I don't have any children and I have never spent more than £10 on a single transaction at Mcdonalds.

Contactless will really kick off when it is built into mobile phones.

Imagine not having to carry cards at all but simply placing your phone on a pad, selecting which account you want to use and entering your pin on your phone rather than a retailers pad that could have been interfered with.

Then being able to see on your mobile device a record of your spending, your account balance etc etc.

As others have noted in Finland, Singapore, Japan this is the 'normal' way to pay for stuff these days and is far more secure than having wallets full of metal and paper.

If your phone or contactless card is stolen, the maximum a thief can get away with is c. 3 transactions before a pin is requested and you are far more likely to notice if your phone has gone and report it stolen than if one card has fallen out of your wallet or purse.

    R.
Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
