Contactless debit cards

  • I make contactless transactions all of the time.

When I hand cash over to people, they never make contact with my hands at all, only the money I'm handing to them :D

No doubt in time, some enterprising crooks will invent a gadget that produces transactions if within say 1m of a contactless card and a new phenomemon will arise - "Electronic Pickpocketing"

Contactless Cards - technology desperately looking for a reason to exist :)

Apparently they have a solution to that, after 3 - 4 contactless transactions in the same day, they ask for your PIN to ensure its you. I don't know if this is reality though as I've not tried a single transaction yet.

I do wonder what would happen with fraudulent transactions though. You get your statement, notice 99p spent in McDonalds and can't remember whether you actually visited the place on that date or not. The obvious way would be to keep receipts, but they would just slow down the entire transactions and you'd have to put them somewhere.

I did read somewhere on the net that since the card is powered by the terminal as with RFID, you can increase the area easily by making your own reader and then reading cards from peoples pockets. The encryption itself has already been broken.

  • Its totally nonsense that only certain lloyds customers can have contactless cards. I'm a lloyds customer, I have a contactless card. All you have to do is ring them up and request one. No pilot, no specific areas just customer request.

Reading this thread made me curious so I had a look at my debit card.

I have a Halifax Reward current account and my card has the wireless symbol on it. I'd never noticed it before but that's probably because I've never seen anywhere that takes them.

Do you mean you don't get a receipt with a contactless transaction? If so, that would be enough to put me off.
