  • Of course you still have to tell the cashier you want to pay by card!!

I tried to pay for a fries by contactless in McDonalds today. I ordered, was told the price (£1.39 I think...), and tapped the pad which had the ")))" symbol on with my debit card (which also has the same symbol), nothing happened, so I held it there, nothing happened. Then I was asked "What you like to pay by card?", I answered "No, I just thought I would show it to you for no reason.". I got no response from the human or the machine, so I stuck my hand in my pocket, give her £2 coin, got my change and left.

So much for ease of use !

I take it therefore that if I want to pay via Contactless, I have to say "I wish to pay by contactless" BEFORE touching the pad with my card? Ie, completely not like the videos and adverts which have someone grabbing a banana and then paying with a card whilst doing 20mph down a water slide shute?
  • It's not impossible, the people you spoke to in the branch didn't give you correct information.

I asked in branch and was told that it was impossible for me to get a card without contactless functionality without changing my account to a basic one.

So today I found the antenna hidden within my card and cut it out. My card now has a small hole in it, but I don't think anyone will care.

And they said it was impossible!

I really do think however that you should not be forced to accept this insecure technocrap, it should be the choice of the customer, not the bank.

Hi, no you don't, the machine is always waiting to accept a contactless payment (you can tell because the first of the four LED's at the top of the card reader is lit)

With the ones in Mcdonalds you have to hold your card over the screen above the PIN pad, then the lights illuminate in succession (takes about 1 second) and once all four are lit you can take your card away, it tells you on the screen instantly if your payment has been accepted and also the order total. The receipt shows "Visa Contactless - no cardholder verification" or something like that

It might be slightly different for each retailer. In the staff canteen the lady on the till has press the card payment option on her screen before the contactless machine lights up, also on Stagecoach buses the driver always presses another button before I swipe my card in front of the machine.

I don't have to tell the cashier I want to pay by cash, why should I have to say I want to pay by card?! Contactless is supposed to be QUICK and EASY (two of the main features, apparently). It's neither.

So, I have to remove the card from my wallet, tell the cashier I want to pay by card and then hold the card on the reader until complete. The only thing I don't have to do is enter my PIN (well, actually, I have to do that too randomly, so they say).

If I paid by chip and pin the only difference is that I insert my card into the reader rather than holding it against the reader and spend 2 seconds entering a PIN. So contactless is 2 seconds quicker. Well thats just fantastic. For the price of saving these 2 seconds, anyone can read your card number, card name and expiry date whilst its in your pocket. Sounds like a pretty crap trade off for me.

In the states, I just shove my card into the reader and if its under $30, it says "Approved" and I'm done. If its above that I'm asked for my PIN (or in some shops, sign a piece of paper). Yes, still only saves 2 seconds, but at least the card can not be read unless someone physically has your card, and they don't claim its some wonderful system that'll make everyones life 100% easier.

I have to agree with you, by the time I've got my card out and told the cashier I wish to pay by card, I might as well shove my card into the reader which accomplishes the same thing (The checkout operator notices you just shoved your card in and pushes the appropriate button on the register, not something you can do with when your just waving your card around an inactive terminal)

The only extra time is entering my PIN, which I don't mind doing at all, as it's additional security and only takes a few seconds.
  • Those that don't want one can just go into a branch to downgrade their card, why bother going to all this trouble?

Because scratching your card is easy and works. What you suggest often doesn't and takes more time - well thats been my overriding experience of Banking in the UK.

You pay for what you get - banking is free in the UK. Too many people do not appreciate this. So I don't expect to go into a Branch or call HO and get people who know and/or have the IT authority to fix the issue.

This is a simple and easy workaround.

I welcomed chip and pin wish it was used throughout the world, much harder to defraud vs a signature.

The few times I have used it so far it has been. I don't understand where you are going wrong

its a total nightmare trying to get Barclays to stop the contactless feature when they reissue your card, they dont ask if you want it they just assume you do and it takes talking to a branch manager to get this feature removed. totally irritating, and very unfair! sure I can see why some people might want it but something that isnt secure and doesnt ask for a pin ever shouldnt just be rolled out automatically to everyone without checking they want it. my gripe is what if someone got hold of my card, how much could they spend before it being cancelled and would barclays pay the money back to me?
