When I took out my mortgage with C & G I got a coloured brochure explaining all their mortgages. At the back there is page which details 'Additional service charges'. They had the MEAF shown as 'Closing Administration charge'.

Changed my mortgage twice in recent years, first from the Halifax - Didn't keep the charges booklet, but saw that they'd charged me £100 when I changed to the Coventry. So I used your letter, changed it a bit to say I was not informed of any Exit Fee, but I'd been charged £100. They wrote back saying there was a £50 fee at the time I took out the mortgage would I accept £50 back?
Similar with the Coventry - I did have the information: when I took out the Mortgage Exit Fee of £75 quoted, charged £150. Sent a letter again, and they sent me a cheque.
£125 back for the cost of two letters. Very pleased!0 -

Last week we redeemed our mortgage and while the closing statement was being prepared I questioned the exit charge, which had risen by £70 since the mortgage was taken out.
Instant result the exit fee was reduced by £100.

Received a letter saying that complaint being investigated through internal complaints procedure (take up to 20 working days).

I took out a mortgage with Bradford and Bingley in 1998.
At the time the redemption fee was £50 and no deeds release fee.
I redeemed my mortgage in February 2007 and was charged £175 'redemption fee' and £60 'deeds inspection fee' a total of £235 in fees to close the mortgage.
Having seen the article on MSE re the possibility of a refund I wrote a letter to Bradford and Bingley explaining the position and politely requested a refund.
Here is the letter I sent -
"The above mortgage account was taken out with Bradford and Bingley in 1998. We recently redeemed the mortgage and were charged two fees by Bradford and Bingley. These fees were: -
Redemption fee = £175.00
Deeds Inspection Fee = £ 60.00
A total of £235.00
We wish to dispute these fees as shown below as we feel that we have never agreed to paying these higher fees, have not agreed the increase from the original contract, and feel that this breaches contract law. This has already recently been commented on by the FSA who have stated that customers who complain should be provided with a refund.
At the time of taking out the mortgage we were provided with a Lending Tariff Sheet (Copy attached) which formed part of the original mortgage contract.
This document includes fees to be charged at redemption of the mortgage. It shows a ‘Vacating Fee’ of £75.00.
In addition it shows that NO ‘Deeds Out’ Fee will be charged at the time of redemption of the mortgage. I also note that a ‘Deeds Inspection Fee’ was used for making copies of documents.
We are of the opinion that we should only have been charged a fee of £75.00 as originally agreed in 1998, and NOT £235.00.
We therefore make a claim for a refund of £160.00 from Bradford and Bingley. Please forward a cheque made payable to ourselves to the address shown above.
We think you in anticipation and look forward to hearing from you within 14 days".
In 10 days i have received a letter from them which states I am entitled to a refund of £185 which I will receive shortly.
Here is the content of the letter from Bradford and Bingley -
"Your complaint concerns the administration fee you incurred when you redeemed your mortgage. The £235 which you incurred on redemption is made up of our £175 redemption fee and our £60 deeds release fee. We are able to charge for administration in line with any tariff of charges we set. The conditions of your mortgage allow us to vary our fees at our discretion.
We have increased these fees and introduced fees in recent years to reflect the increasing costs we face as a business. i would accept, however, these charges are now significantly higher than when you agreed the mortgage. In recognition of this, I am happy to make a concession in this instance.
When you took your mortgage with us the redemption charge was £50 and we didnt charge a deeeds release fee. I feel it is reasonable that a charge of this amount should be payable in line with your agreement to uour terms and conditions in 1998.
As a result of this you'll receive a refund of £185 shortly. This concession is made in good will and in order to come to an amicable solution".
As can be seen I actually got more than I requested !!

I read my weekly MSE email at 8am this morning and read about claiming back the charges. I phoned the woolwich at 8.40 and was £200 richer by 8.43. I phoned another friend with the Woolwich to tell him and with only details of his address he is £210 richer. I am told a work colleague and she is with the Halifax, she is now £85 richer. I phoned Halifax yesterday on their dedicated line having no details of my previous mortgages with them. They were extremely helpful and are sending me a cheque for £25 for a mortgage I took out with them in 1999 that I'd completely forgotten about! A ten minute phone call was all it took!!!!
As I change my mortgage every two years I'm trying to remember who else I've had a mortgage with over the last ten years!!!0 -
I remortgaged last July so rang the bank to check redemption figure which turned out to be okay. checked all the other charges while I was at it & they told me that I had been over charged for the legal fees. I now have a cheque for £241 comming out to me!!!!! Hooo-ra!0

When I ended my mortgage with Skipton in Jan 2002 I was charged
£45 Discharge fees and
£35 sundry debits
Does anyone know what sundry debits relate to are they part of the discharge fee?
Any comments appreciated.
