Phoned C&G this morning to ask what exit fee I had paid when I remortgaged in 2005. I was told that I had paid £225 and ask to hold the line while they calculated how much I had overpaid. I did'nt even had to ask for a refund. Informed that I had overpaid by £125.00 and was entitled to £9.87 Interest. Told they would refund £134.87 in the next 14 days. Many thanks

I called my previous lenders today, firstly C&G, asked me a few questions, then advised if had overpaid by £125 and would get this refunded to my bank account within 20 days, then called the Woolwich and advised I had overpaid them by £35 and this would be refunded within 7 days. so all in all not bad for 10 mins work. Thanks martin!!!!!

I took out a mortgage with the now defunct N&P in 1992 before they were taken over by Abbey. I paid £225 to Abbey last year when I changed mortgage. I could not find any details of an N&P MEAF in 92. I just wrote to Abbey to say the £225 they charged was not what they had contracted with me in 1992 and asking for a refund.

Within a few days I got the annoying Abbey claim form to complete and four days later I received a cheque for £175.

Received a letter saying that complaint being investigated through internal complaints procedure (take up to 20 working days).
Has anyone else received this response and how did you get on.

Update 24 hours later:j cheque refund of £195 will be :A its way to you shortly.
Looking at the way the figure has been calculated no allowance has been added for interest has anyone received this from B&B.
Will give them a ring on Monday to see if this is achievable

Anyone had any dealings with West Bromwich Mortgage Company or GMAC with regards to Mortgage Exit Fees?
  • We removed last September, and paid off our Bistol & West mortgage in full. At the time, I complained about the exit fee of £195, only to be told that it represented the true cost to the bank of the administrative costs involved. I had transferred our mortgage to B&W in January 1999, at which time the MEAF was £100, according to the leaflet supplied then. Having read Martin's article in January, I approached them again, claiming £95. I received an offer to return £57.50 to me. They say that there was always an additional fee of £37.50 to provide the property deeds, but that this was not quoted as part of the MEAF then, but nowadays it is included in the £195. The original leaflet is not clear about this, to put it mildly.
Can anyone comment on this? Would it be best to accept the £57.50, or fight on?
  • Thank you so much for this valuable tip. I've managed to claim back over £180 with just a phone call. This site is fantastic. I visit frequently and it really helps to keep me informed and allow me to make better decisions with my money than I could previously.

Well done Martin - I made 107 from the Woolwich and 125 from C&G just in my lunch hour on Thurs.Am now trying the Halifax(though they can't find my roll no and are investigating)
I also had a Credit Agricole Mortgage in 1990s and can't find any contact details- it doesnt look like they have a reail operation in UK any more- just an investment bank. Any other readers had success with Credit Agricole?
  • Thank you so much for your tip on Mortgage Exit fees. Phoned Woolwich (Barclays) couple of minutes ago, and although I paid the mortgage off in full in 2003, they retrived my details immediately, and within one minute I was £135 better off!! Easiest money I have ever made - so thank you.
  • Just rang CO-OP and got £110 for a mortgage from 2003 - 2005. Apparently, it'll be paid straight into my account.
Then speculatively rang Halifax and got £35 on a mortgage from 1997 - 2001!!! They'll be send a cheque.

I notice a lot of you are writing to your lenders. It may be worth calling first to see if you can get a refund without writing. Of course this is (MONEY)saving yourselves some time and the cost of a stamp or 2.

    :money: would approve.
