Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Hi Just wanted to say the advice about the phone call was bang on Spoke to Royal Bank of Scotand asked for a breakdown of the charges on a mortgage I cleared in Sept last year. I was told I paid £225 in MEAF charges rest was interest. Advised them that my mortgage paperwork said £75 and could they clarify and justify the difference, they advised that they had changed terms and conditions in 2005 and that I had agreed to this. I asked for a copy stating I could only find the original ones from when I took the mortgage out. Insisted nicely that they post them to me. Was put on hold and then told as a GESTURE OF GOODWILL THEY WOULD REFUND ALL THE MEAF CHARGES directly into my bank account and with 2 hours BINGO I am £225 richer.
Wish everything was that easy. Got another one to do today for an old Abbey National One from 2002 and looking forward to it.
Many thanks :T0 -
I contacted UCB Home Loans for a mortgage that ended in 1998 and they have agreed to refund the "sealing fee" of £50 and are looking into the redemption fee charged. The response will be via the post.:T
Then I contacted Birmingham Midshires (mortgage ended 2003) they dealt with my claim over the phone and £100 cheque is due.::j
Next the Halifax (ended 2004) over the phone- £75 in the post by cheque.::j
Lastly the Abbey - they say that they are inundated with enquires and will only transact via post. A form will be sent out to me
Thank You Martyn0 -
I heard about this refund of charges and tried A+L who I had my previous mortgage with.I had my account number but not a lot of other details relating to the account.Initially they seemed willing to deal on the phone but then asked me to write when I said I had moved ( yes that's why I remortgaged! ) So I wrote and in flash they had sent a cheque for £100 the difference between the "Early closure Administration charge" on 5/1/04 £195 and when we closed the mortgage it was £295. The cheque was made out in the wrong names and also I knew we had completed the mortgage before 5/1/04 so wrote back and asked for the difference in the fees to be from when the mortgage was completed rather than the date they introduced this new fee.Today I have received a cheque for £210 which I am very pleased with. Our mortgage was probably completed in Dec 2003 so 2 weeks made a BIG difference and I would encourage others who have been offered £100 because of the introduction of the "new" early closure administration charge in Jan 2004 to hold out for the full amount.;)0

I phoned Bradford & Bingley on Saturday morning and was given the address to send my complaint. I posted a letter to them on Sunday and today I had a rely telling me the redemption fee was £75 when I took out my mortgage 10 years ago, but I was charged £235 when I paid off the mortgage in September last year. As a result they are sending a cheque for £160 under separate cover.
Brilliant. Thanks for the advice Martin and good luck to everyone else.0 -

Hi
Just rang Abbey although my mortgage change from them was 1999, unfortunately they only give rebates from 2005 exit
Oh well - tried but not successful:o0 -
Hi all,
I had an Alliance & Leicester mortgage from 1997 until summer 2005. They charged me £295 MEAF.
I sent the sample letter asking for a £205 refund. I can't find the original paperwork but £90, which is the figure quoted on this website for A&L MEAFs, sounds familiar.
I received the following today. As promised in our previous correspondence, I have looked into the issue you have raised and hope we are now able to agree the way forward.
Alliance & Leicester first introduced a single administration fee of £195 from 5 January 2004 called the Early Closure Administration Charge. The fee was increases in August 2004 to £295 and this has been detailed in the leaflet that would have accompanied your Annual Mortgage Statement each year since then. We have decided to reduce the fee payable to customers who took out their mortgage before August 2004 to the original level of £195 – a reduction of £100.
Having reviewed our records, I am pleased to enclose a cheque for £100 refund against the £295 Redemption Administration Charge that was incurred on closure of your account.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss any aspect of this matter further. If I have not heard from you within the next 7 days, I will regard your complaint as closed.
A partial success but should I continue for the full amount? Any tips greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jake
I returned the £100 cheque to A&L with a covering letter stating I wanted a full refund, ie the difference between the original MEAF quoted and what I actually paid.
Today I received a cheque for a whopping £235.00, which is £30 more than I asked for!!
Any A&L customers who took out their mortgage before Aug 2004 is entitled to a FULL REFUND and not just the £100 A&L were offering.
Good luck to all.

We closed our mortgage with the Alliance & Leicester in 1999 with a charge of £295.
A telephone call to customer services gave an instant refund of £100 being advised this was there standard response. Armed with the information from this forum we challenged this stating that we were aware of a number of people who had been offered substantially more. We were informed our complaint would be registered but we decided to immediately follow this with a letter.
Whilst not having the original contract we did have all annual statements. On the back of the earliest statement it makes reference to redemption and sealing of deeds £75 so we made reference to this in my letter and requested a refund of £220. Today I received a cheque for the requested amount. Excellent result
Thanks Martin0
