Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Having read some of the posts, I have to comment that I am surprised that people are stating "well done xxx" or "thank you yyy" to the banks and building societies. Don't people realise that these are the very institutions that ripped them off and have been found with their hand in our tills!
They are not giving the money back out of the goodness of their hearts, but because they committed fraud!0 -

I started with them in 2000 and switched in jan 07.
I rang them without success as they said the fees they charge are minimum and the FSA report does not affect them.Strange as they are part of Halifax and there have been loads of success stories from ex halifax custs.
Any help,advice muchly appreciated.
I have no paper work or anything as binned it all.
Not sure what I am entitled to.0 -
Just rang Halifax ref a remortgage I did in 2002 and they were very helpful (and so they should be) Worked out my refund which was only £25 but it's my £25 so they are sending a cheque.
Next one is the remortgage I did in 2004 - wish me luck!0 -
Not so good for this one.
Opened Mortgage with Abbey in Feb 2002 and closed it in Feb 2004. I paid a redemption fee of £99. Just checked with abbey and they say back in 2002 it was £95 so im due £4.0 -
Halifax have agreed to refund £25 for my mortgage 1998-2003. Then the lovely chap realised I had had a previous mortgage and is giving me a further £30 for that one! woohoo! Thanx Martin! :j0

Hi msr
I haven't got figure for 1997 but I have original leaflet of Abbey mortgage charges from Jan 1999 (CPA3 0028 JAN99 W), which states:
Deedsafe
£55*
The Deedsafe service is available upon final repayment of your mortgage account, where you are not selling your home. If you retain 50p outstanding on your mortgage account, we will keep your property deeds in safe storage. Further details are available at our branches
* Not chargeable in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Sent template letter to Woolwich over a month ago. I had no details of my contract, apart from the account number and didn't know the original fee amount. Just asked for the £275 charged to be refunded. No response!
Just called the Barclays / Woolwich freephone number, immediate refund of £275 - £65 (apparently the original fee in 1998 in my contract) plus interest at 4% credited to my bank account within 3 days. Very happy!
Thanks Martin!0 -
Excellent. Just phoned Halifax about our mortgage that was paid off 2.5 years ago. Was told we'd been 'overcharged' by £60 and that the cheque would be in the post within 28 days. :j
Now if only I could get a regular income of £60 for less than 5 minutes work.
Thanks Martin - much appreciated and keep up the good work.
