I rang the C&G to enquire about their position on exit fees. I moved from them to Abbey last October. They said because I had re-jigged my mortgage in 2005 I had agreed to an exit fee of £225 and was therefore due no refund. I could be being a bit naive here but I wonder if I should accept this or challenge it. Any advice gratefully received.
If you changed your product or took a further advance in 2005, you are deemed to have accepted the fee relevant at that time. So I expect that they are correct and you should accept it.
  • Well done to the Woolwich. After getting a lead off this site went to the thisismoney site and found a number to phone the Woolwich. Spent 5 minutes on the phone giving account number and personal details and was told a £111 (£100 plus interest) would be credited to my bank account within 3 days. Lo and behold it was there, if only they had been so efficient when my mortgage was with them!!
  • Hi
Paid my mortgage off with Cheltenham & Gloucester in March 2006 and was charged a 'closing admin fee' of £225.00. My original contract stated £100.

Used the template letter and sent it to Cheltenham & Gloucester requesting the difference of £125 on 11 February 2007. On the 15 February 2007!!!! I received a reply from C & G stating they were sending me a cheque by separate cover for £132.00 ( £125.00 + £7.00 interest). Cheque now received. Cheers

  • Was charged £225 by Abbey on switching mortgage to Britannia. Wrote simple letter claiming that I didn't feel it was justified. Was sent a form to complete, took no more than 5 minutes to complete (I told them to look up the exact dates of my borrowings themselves!). I received a cheque for £160 on Saturday, with no arguments!! Brilliant result - huge thanks to Martin for raising this issue. xx
  • I recieved a cheque from The Abbey today for £126.

Was charged £225 in 2005 for moving my mortgage. I didn't have the documentation for what I had been originally quoted in 2003 so I used the template letter. Abbey then returned a form which is dead easy and quick to fill in. A week later a cheque arrived.

    Back of the net!!

    Brilliant, thanks Martin!
  • Almost exactly the same story ad mdhorr. Received a cheque today for £126 from Abbey for a mortgage that existed from 2003 - 2005 and that I didn't have the documentation for. Used the template letter, filled in the abbey form.

  • Thanks a lot Martin. Three weeks ago I sent Woolwich your template letter requesting information about any exit fees charged on my mortgage, which I got out of last July. Within about five days I had a letter back from Woolwich/Barclays asking me to ring them about it on an 0800 freephone number. They asked me usual security questions to identify me, informed me about the actual fee (fair enough) and that they would refund me £187.60. I gave them a bank account number for the transfer. The sum was in my bank account within three days. Not bad for about 20 minutes 'work'. Thanks again. Bigbadwolfatlarge :j :T

Thanks for the advice and giving me the push to call,
I rang the Halifax using the numbers provided, I did not have the dates I was with them, but I had the A/C number, the nice chap on the phone gave me all the dates and figures I needed, and he said that there is a large backlog, but I should be receiving £100 within 28 days. I smiled for about 10 minutes, then I thought I remortgaged back in 2003 away from the Yorkshire, so I thought I would give them a ring too, sure enough a cheque for £61.00 in the post to me soon!! Yipedeedoodles!!
£161.00 for about 15 minutes in phone calls

Hi - I've been extremely stupid and haven't kept any paperwork from previous mortgages - can i still claim if don't know what the redemption charges were quoted as and what was subsequently charged.

The mortgages we have had have been with the following

    2000 - 2002 - Halifax

    2002 - 2004 - Northern Rock

    2004 - Current - Scarborough

Also we had a temporary mortgage for a second property with C & G from October 2005 - March 2006.

    Any help greatfully recieved.

    Thanks

I couldnt tell from the closure of two previous mortgages exactly how must the exit fee had been, so took a rough guess and sent two standard letters from the Fool website to:-

    - Coventry, who confirmed I had paid what they had originally specified (£55 + £40 deeds release fee) which I accept.

    - Alliance & Leicester, who confirmed I had paid more than my original contract, and in fact, more than I had assumed and refunded £155 immediately.

So, even if you dont know how much you were charged it is still worth making a claim.
