Freebie Manor was the name on the Plaque my mum gave me for first home which was equiped with freebie banded cups, teapot, coffee pot oh and a sofa which cost a bottle of Vodka. My motto's are don't ask dont get, and don't buy if they say no.

Mortgage taken out with Leeds Building Society in 1978 and increased in 1986. Leeds Building Society was taken over by Halifax.
I know in some mortgages where they mortgage was held by more than 10 years with the Halifax, then no MEAF would have been charged and this could be what has happened in your case. The only way to know for definitely is to check your mortgage documentation.

Noz, thank you for this information. Looks like this is the case. I might have better luck in some of Martin's other money savers.

Just phoned up Woolwich on the dedicated number on your site and in less than 5 minutes sorted out my refund plus interest. Very easy. Thanks:beer:

We left our mortgage in 2006 and paid £225.

Rang up 2 weeks ago, they sent a one page form, filled it in and sent it back.

Cheque this morning for £160 (we originally took the mortgage out in September 1998).

Oh and SAY NO TO 0870 and contact Abbey on 0800 555100 - then the reclaim should only cost you the price of a stamp to post the form back.

Just deciding now if I should push for the interest owed - anyone else been successful in a claim to interest from Abbey????

Oh and thanks Martin for making me jump on the bandwagon!

£20 back from NatWest - I just had to send a letter to the Mortgage Centre in B'ham. They told me it was the difference between the £85 I paid in 2001 and the £65 it actually "costs" them.

I didn't ask for interest and it's only £20 but hey, better than nothing ;)

    Thanks MSE :T

I paid off my mortgage with the Halifax in April 2004, & paid 100 mortgage discharge fee. Just called them and will be getting 25 back!!
  • Hi Guys,

just to say that I am just off the phone with Alliance & Leicester.
I took out my mortgage in June 1999 and then moved in June 2005 to Nationwide.

When I moved I was charged a £295 exit fee. I couldn't find my original agreement (actually didn't look very hard, as I had heard I could just ring them up). When I got through I just gave them my old account number and asked them to check my contracted fee against what I had been charged.

A few seconds was all it took to find out that they had overcharged me by £100. Apparently things changed in 2004 and I was still on my original tie in.
Apparently I will be hearing from them shortly to confirm and to repay.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to MoneySavingExpert. That's the quickest £100 I have ever earned :T

Will post again if things don't run smoothly from here.
  • Following the instructions given I phoned Abbey about reimbursement of the exit fee. They sent a form immediately and a week later I have received a cheque for £175 (being the difference between the £225 charged on exit and the £50 quoted on the original contract). Thanks, Martin.
  • Started mortgage with SL bank in Dec 99.
Switched mortgage away from SL in Jul 05 with exit fee of £185.
Wrote to SL on 25th January 2008, stating that I was unaware of any mortgage exit fee when I signed the contract and asked for any difference returned to me.
SL wrote back, received letter today 1st February 2008 (1 week later!) with cheque for £185. No interest, but that's beside the point.

    Good work MSE! Thanks. :T
