  • :j Thanks so much. I rang C & G last Friday. When I took my mortgage out in 1994 I was quoted £35 and in 2006 when I cleared the debt I paid £225 as a final admin fee. It literally took less than 2 mins on the phone and yesterday I received a letter stating that I would receive a cheque for £207.87 in the next few days. Yipee! I wouldn't have even realised that I had paid more than originally quoted if it hadn't been for Martin's website.
It's taught me a lesson to be more vigilant in future and not just accept what the large financial institutions tell us.
    Thanks Martin you're a star!
  • I Rang the Alliance and leicester whom i left three years ago without knowing my old mortgage account number. After a few security questions they gave me the account number and logged my complaint. Within two days i recieved a letter stating they were dealing with my complaint and had 28 days to sort it. Within 8 days i recieved a cheque for two hundred and twenty pounds. Just for one phone call. :j

I rang Northern Rock about mine, which I paid off two years ago, and they said send it in writing. So I did, last week. Today I got a letter saying it should have been £175, not the £250 you were charged!
    Yeah, I got back £75!!!!!
    Thanks Martin!!!!

Spoke to West Bromwich Mortgage Company back in March about the MEAF I was charged. Ended up having to put in in writing but heard nothing.

Called again last week and wrote in again and they came back offering £70 refund out of the £225 I paid when my mortgage swapped over.

I turned it down stating that the two other MEAF disputes I sent in ended with the RBS and GMAC only charging £55 and £60 for their admin charges. Once again they wanted my non-acceptance of their offer in writing. So another letter was sent and today they offered a £175 refund!!!!!

SO DON'T ACCEPT THEIR FIRST OFFER, STATE THAT THE AVERAGE MEAF FEE IS AROUND £50 AND YOU SHOULD GET THE DIFFERENCE!!

    HAPPY DAYS!!!!
  • I am new to this site and with trepidation made the calls about the mortgage exit fees and was surprised at how easy it was. Have received £260.

    Thankyou Martin Lewis.

I now look at the site at least once a day.
  • I had a morgage with Birmingham Midshires 4 years ago in 2004. I did what Martin suggested and rung them up, this took about 3 minutes and for my troubles I received £100.00 cheque!!! We only had a tiny morgage of £40,000 too. You are mad not to make the call!!

    Thank you Martin:j
  • Downloaded the template from the site and made slight adjustments so as to reflect the format of the requests to both the Abbey and Nationwide. I received a cheque for £90 today from Nationwide almost by return of post, excellent service. Hopefully, I should hear something from Abbey in due course.

As the table said that Nationwide did not pay interest I deleted that part of the template letter and just said that I would leave it to their discretion as to whether they wanted to pay interest. They politely declined but I am not disappointed as they were so professional about the whole matter.

I also had a Portman mortgage about 8-10 years ago and wondered if it was worth asking them as well but I don't have any paperwork anymore. Also, as they are now part of Nationwide should I address the query to the same address I sent my Nationwide letter to or as the table atill shows Portman at their Bournemouth HQ should I send it there?
  • Ok so only £10 back off Abbey to add to the £75 from Northern Rock but worth the price of the stamp easily.

  • I phoned both Halifax and Alliance&Leicester last Friday.
This Friday I received a cheque for £100 back from A&L.
Halifax confirmed that a £50 cheque has just been sent to me.

    Nice one.

I would call Portman if I were you and just give them your name and address as thats all they should need, its worth a try!
