Tried Scottish widows who I had mortgage with in 2004, they said you paid £100, I said so was I overcharged?, they replied you paid £100?.

I'm in a similar situation. I phoned Scottish Widows today and got some garbled message about £100 and £195. I asked her what i was due and she said nothing! I told her that couldn't be right so she's taken my details and will investigate.
  • Blimey - that was easy!

Just called C&G and told them I'd like to reclaim my mortgage exit fee. They looked me up, told me I'd been charged £225 when it should have been £50. The refund plus interest totalled £197.50, which they said would be paid straight into my current account. Just like that.

    I am a happy bunny! :j
  • Phoned Barclays/Woolwich today after seeing your item on the TV.So glad I did. They are refunding £57.26 which includes interest for our mortgage which was redeemed 8 years.Husband was sceptical. It just shows what a phone call can do. Thanks Martin. Good work
  • Thanks, called Standard Life last Friday after digging out old paperwork to discover they should have charged us £150 and they actually charged us £185.

So getting £35.00 paid back into my account. I have been passing the word onto everybody aswell.

Oh the new book is great and the mantras!
  • I finally got round to reclaiming exit fees and was initially offered a refund of £75 from HBOS but as I had paid two fees totalling £225, I declined their kind offer and requested them to justify their costs. After a bit of a delay they have written to me today and as a gesture of goodwill (!!!!) they are now willing to give me a full refund of the total fees of £225 plus interest of 8% so I am now £243 better off-Thank you Martin!!!!
I am in the process of moving my mortgage from HBOS again so should I challenge their newly re-named Repayment Administration fee of £175????????? :j

Yes just had same, they are not as easy as the others in refunding, but I have left details and they are getting back to me, she said they have a special team dealing with.

    Will keep you posted!

Only if you will be overcharged but I believe that HBOS has amended their fees to what they should be automatically now
  • After reading all the success stories on here, I dug out my old paperwork for a mortgage with Alliance and Leicester I paid off in 2005 with a Mortage Exit Fee of £295 being charged. I made a call to the Alliance and Leicester Mortgage Centre and asked how to reclaim. She just asked me for my mortgage account number which I gave her. She said she would take it from there. She added that "things would have to be checked because our rules changed in 2004". I said to her that if they are going to get out of paying me though a legal loophole then I would like Full Details in a letter please as I was going to forward it to Martyn Lewis for checking out !! Imagine my delight when I got home from work tonight to find a letter detailing my charge in 1990 when I took the mortgage out was £10 and the fee I was charged in 2005 when redeeming was £295. Enclosed with the letter was a cheque for the fabulous amount of £285. Martyn, you are a hero to us all. May your site go from strength to strength !!
