I redeemed my mortgage with the Halifax in July 2006 and paid £175 exit fee. After reading your article I telephoned the Halifax head office and was told they didn't know what I was talking about. They told me to visit my local branch office which I did. I spoke to a supervisor who was quite unpleasant and said she was fed up with people enquiring about people trying to reclaim bank charges. She also told me I had to abide by their rules and that I had agreed to pay their fee when I took my mortgage out. I pointed out that that was 20 years ago and couldn't remember much about what I had agreed. I told her I was not happy with her comments and proposed to take it further. I spoke to a friend where I work who had obviously read your article in greater depth and actually provided me with a dedicated telephone number for the Halifax which was in your article. I rang the number, was asked for my mortgage roll number by a very pleasant and helpful chap, he then looked at my mortgage, told me I had agreed to pay zero and was entitled to a full refund and didn't have to do anything more. I then received a cheque for the £175 in the post two weeks later. Thank you so much Martin. I am eternally grateful as have retired from work and the money was most useful.

    Where is it
  • Hi All,

I have had a positive outcome with a refund of £150 to be credited back into my account. Thanks a million for the info as I would not have known better.
After reading the recent article on exit fee mortgage charges I contacted my previous mortgage lender (RBS) to discuss the 'sealing fee' charge of £225. They were very cooperative and agreed to inform me of the original exit fee agreement, which was £75. I am now awaiting my refund of £150 which should be credited shortly. .....Great Stuff!!

Had to write, first time but not the first success.caught Martin on LK-to-day
discussing overpayment's again this time changing your mortgage.I called the Royal Bank of Scotland and true enough £150 overpayment agreed on the phone money will be in my hand within 10 days so I have five to go.
Martin is a genius so much so that I haggle over everything I buy and take all shoddy produce back to stores if it is not up to standard before I would just throw the item in the bin.
    cheers moneyspinners modgirl:beer:

Wrote to Alliance and Leicester (paid £295 in 2005) very brief letter with little hope of achieving anything. Received cheque for £220 within 2 weeks, so pleased with myself! Thanks to Martins Money tips for all the advice.

that's good, once you recieve it - check what the price of the MEAF you agreed to against the one you actually paid, you can reclaim any difference
