    Hi

Just made a call and was immediately told yes a cheque for the difference between the contract and that charged would be issued - £ 30 on its way - a small success! Am now just waiting on Bank of Ireland - Had to write / fax request and told I would get a response within 5 days - I'll let you all know what happens...........

I have just received a cheque for £135 from the Halifax in respect of excess charges incurred when switching my mortgage – all thanks to MSE.

If anybody out there has not done this already, its a MUST DO.
Simply download the letter, send it off and wait for the response - it took me a couple more reminder letters including the threat of legal action if I did not receive a response - but within 6 weeks I had the cheque.

1-0 to the little guy - thank you MSE.

You need to look at your original documentation at the point you signed up for your mortgage, it will detail what charges you would pay - if it details a smaller charge than the one you ended up paying, then I think you should be entitled to a refund of the difference.
    Good luck.

How do you find out if you are entitled to some money back or not

5 minute call to Woolwich. I gave my old account number (from Feb 06), they immediately said 'You paid £275 Final Repayment Charge, it should have been £150, so you are due £125 plus £6.25 interest'.
Easy as that (although £150 still seems quite steep, but who am I to complain?).
Next on to Halifax for my 2004 remortgage...

I changed my mortage from Alliance and Leicester in April 2005

I wrote to them about 4 weeks ago requesting a refund of all/part of the £295 MEAF and am now the proud owner of a cheque for £100 - not bad for a letter that took 10 mins to write and the cost of a 1st class stamp

so....anyone out there dithering over whether they should claim needs to write that letter/make that call now!

good luck to you all and happy spending!!!

DON'T TAKE YOUR FIRST OFFER FROM THE HALIFAX!
I contacted the Halifax after being overcharged by £100 on my MEAF. They promptly replied, offering to refund the £100 overpayment, however, I had also told them that I suspected they had made a profit on the £75 original MEAF charge quoted and asked them to justify how it came to such an amount when independant research had shown it should cost much less. They replied to this letter also and, as a "...gesture of goodwill...", offered to refund not only the £100 originally offered, but also the complete £75 original charge. RESULT!!!
