Y'know, if I lived somewhere near highway one in California, or the Alpine region of France or Italy then having a 'plaything' car starts to make some sort of sense. Winding open roads, amazing scenery, sunshine.
I just don't get it in the UK. You spend however much on a classic car which you then get to sit in a queue in roadworks on the A149 outside Swindon on a drizzly Sunday. Don't see the point. It's just a vanity thing isn't it? Like designer clothes?
On the contrary .... I drive through the New Forest and on to the beach .... it's quiet, especially at 5am when we have a barbeque breakfast on the beach. It is a convertible old Sports Car.

You're right there .... last Sunday I looked at a Jaguar XKR to add to my collection, as cheap as they have ever been.
This is seriously cheap:- http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201130406056081 you can also easily get 10% OFF this screen price.
Of course, it would have to be a plaything - but, they are remarkable bargains ..... plenty out there very, very, very, cheap.Bringing Happiness where there is Gloom!0 -

Fair enough. It's horses for courses I guess. And I love my life and do loads of fun things, but I'm just not interested in cars. BBQs on the beach with family and friends sounds ace, I'm just not personally bothered whether it's a £5k or £50k car that gets me there.
On a serious note, what percentage of your journeys are the magical, 5am, New Forest type drives and what percentage are the sitting in drizzly queues on a-roads types wishing you were doing something else?0 -

I have a 12 year old MX5 as a weekend toy. Its no classic but it costs peanuts to run and works out as pretty cheap entertainment. I do have the whole of Kent to play in.On the contrary .... Trips out in the plaything, in mileage terms, far outweigh the regular transport.
I work less than 2 miles away from my front door - shop within 10 miles - I do not sit in traffic jams, ever. I couldn't do it.
I smile when I see the traffic cameras on the news in the morning as I am thinking about getting out of bed ..... the jams around the M25, say.
It's madness, it's bonkers - but, for some reason, people do it.
I do not do queues .....Bringing Happiness where there is Gloom!0 -

Fantastic cars the MX5 ..... they are certainly the bargain weekend toy.
12 years old would make it the last of the Mark 1's? Maybe a Berkley SE? Or it could be one of the early Mark 2's?Bringing Happiness where there is Gloom!0 -
car insurance 298 per year
car tax 190.0 per year
fuel approx 80.0 per month
mot about £60 husband does minor repairs and didn't need anything this year or last
still works out (without actually buying the car in the first place) to about £130 a month, approx £30 week still preferable to public transport and I just cannot face cycling to work at the moment after seeing some poor guy sqashed by a lorry recently
