I've recently spent £500 for tyres all round, then £500 for brakes all round, most of an exhaust system... I was kind of expecting £400 for that lot. Not spent much on diesel... although it does all add up, it'd probably be £100/month if I were keeping a proper eye on it.
If I'd not sold my house and was living in it and had a job there's no way I'd have been able to afford that and I'd have subsequently lost my job probably... no point borrowing it as I'd have not been able to pay it back either.0 -

Jack Dee joke...
He was telling his grandmother about how pleased he was with his recent purchase of a new Japanese car. His grandmother was disgusted and asked how he could do that after what his grandad went through in the war.
Jack Dee 'oh really, was he in a prisoner of war camp - I didn't know that'
Grandmother 'no he wasn't; he just had a series of unreliable Japanese cars between 1939 and 1945'0 -

I hate spending money on cars. I have zero interest in them and have always buy the very cheapest and simplest thing I can that will get me from A to B. The thought of going out and buying a BMW or Audi or whatever for £25,000 is just such an odd concept to me.
I b ought a 1.0 litre thing with about 10,000 miles on it last year and do around 8,000 miles a year. Car cost around £5,000 and I expect it to last at least 8 years.
Tax is £20, insurance £250, maintenance maybe an average of about £500 a year. Petrol is currently about 10p a mile, so based on that petrol costs about £800 a year. So £1570 runnng costs a year.
So I reckon it'll cost me around £2,203 a year. However, around 4,000 miles a year are for work who pay 45p a mile, so I'll get £1,800 in income.
So my car actually costs me £403 a year, or £33 a month. Which I can cope with.

I love working on my own cars, I don't have to - of course - but just really enjoy working on the 4 cars in the family.
Nothing goes wrong with them, just servicing needed.

I have a classic sports car which is 17 years old next spring, that's my plaything.
Y'know, if I lived somewhere near highway one in California, or the Alpine region of France or Italy then having a 'plaything' car starts to make some sort of sense. Winding open roads, amazing scenery, sunshine.
I just don't get it in the UK. You spend however much on a classic car which you then get to sit in a queue in roadworks on the A149 outside Swindon on a drizzly Sunday. Don't see the point. It's just a vanity thing isn't it? Like designer clothes?0
