Average annual cost of motoring nearing £7000

As taken from the MSE article.

Sounds about right if you include purchasing costs.

10k miles a year = 120-200 PM costs jsut for petrol/diesel on an average car.
Throw in 50 PM for insurace
Throw in another 50 PM for tax tyres and servicing.

So you are at 300 PM without even paying for the car yet.

My Aston costs much more than that, but - my everyday Diesel Audi A8 is cheaper - so, as an average I suppose it's close to being correct.

  • I've worked out mine (secondhand car) works out as just under £2,500 a year doing a mileage of 6,000

My Ferrari 250 GT costs me that a second, but my run-around McLaren F1 only costs that about a week.

My 12 inch penis costs me nothing.

Are model cars really that expensive these days??

Maybe you are right MrRee. If you can lavish such expense on toy cars maybe we really are in boom times.

The survey seems to be based on brand new cars, with the bulk of the quoted cost being depreciation in the first year. Averages of this type are always a problem as very few people are average and I can't imagine the average man buying a brand new car once a year.

Its to run a "NEW" car

AA annually release figures , believe they based theirs on average cost on first 4 yrs of ownership.

    Either way its expensive.

I am currently running a economical diesel - low on fuel, but as a newish car (purchased 7 months old) still high on depreciation

I've just spent over £ 2.5k  on my A8

New Cambelt, waterpump, alternator clutch pulley, belt idler tensioner, 2 new tyres and front ball joints.

......and that was with labour only costing £25 ph

Those dastardly Germans, who still manufacture things (bar stewards), have undoubtedly installed a suicide chip in the engine management system of their vehicles.

Sales of new cars falling? No problem! Activate the chip in a selection of current (out of warranty) cars and you have an increase in the market for parts. The same goes for anything else controlled by a computer chip.

In reality I'm sure that this doesn't happen (yet). It just seems like it with everything that I buy.

You could run a nice sideline offering B&B at your place with prices like that! My local garage was charging over £100/hour a few years back and the cheapest properly qualified/able chap with a business in his home garage was charging £33/hour two years ago (and that was mates rates).
