def. fanatic. Someone who has fallen so in love with the journey that they have forgotten the destination.

You would kill someone for trying to encourage you to save a life? I think we can safely ignore your opinions on this, you aggressive psychopath.

Good heavens:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:(although my OH agrees with this assessment of me)

Poster sounded extremely young, extremely naive and extremely annoying. Of all the patronising, ill-thought out comments on the thread this was about the worst,

It is not the place of the OP to ask others to justify their actions and they are fortunate they received so many polite answers in return. This was not reciprocated by the 'pros'.

It is not the place of 'sweetstudent' (who should change their username) to educate anyone into following her ideas on what is or is not an acceptable way to live their lives; it is not her business.

The 'pros' on this thread seem incapable of realising that their replies do not make them appear caring and humane - they appear (IMO) as unpleasant, hectoring, controlling bigots.

To add to what I will continue to do - the illnesses I have suffered mean I cannot be a blood donor nor would my organs be likely to be of use despite my carrying a donor card. However bits removed from my body have already been used for medical research - will that do to satisfy your lust for justification of their life choices from total strangers?

Actually - as my contribution is pretty skimpy, tell me what you have done to help save lives? I obviously assume you are a blood donor

without wanting to come across as the bully i've been labelled as in this thread (which i completely refute), why not grab a moment of 'bravery*' and sign up with the link in my opening post?

*i've tried to word that in the best way i could without sounding patronising or in a 'bullying' way. i think we all have strong fears, whether we like to admit it or not (for the record, mine is being buried alive. to the point i had to turn off kill bill vol. 2 and look away for the duration of the 'buried' trailer at the pictures) but just taking a minute to fill the form in now, send a quick text to your nearest & dearest letting them know you're on it and then just forget about it. job done. apologies if that does come across as patronising, it's not intended to :)

I think that perhaps you and others should just accept that people have, and are entitled to have, differing opinions on this emotive issue.

Perhaps a donor register with five levels would be a good idea.
    1. people who are unable to donate for whatever reason
    2. people who opt out & they cannot then ask permission of family
    3. people who wish their bodies to go to medical science
    4. those who do are automatically opted in whose family must agree to the donation
    5. those who opt in whose family does not have to be asked. Perhaps this should be renewable every two years.

I'd hate to have to live a zombie-like existence if I was cut up but not really dead.

  • It sounds daft, but I want to be buried/cremated with my eyes and heart, if I could say that can have everything but that (I may be wrong but I don't think you can specify which organs!). I know I'll be dead, but I want to know that my eyes and heart are there - if I could I would donate everything else - maybe it's some subconcious belief in the after life!

It does appear that most people who would not consider donating organs after their death, feel that way for reasons other than religion. The most common fear is "being cut up while still alive", which is perfectly understandable I guess.

I do agree with the poster who commented that a family shouldn't be allowed to override the donor's decision. I've always thought that was a sticking point in the current system, my first husband was very much against donation and the fact that he would have legally been allowed to refuse to donate my organs if I had died, clearly makes a mockery of the whole idea of a donation register. My family have no problem with donation, I know that they would comply with my wishes but as my (ex) husband was classed as my next-of-kin, he had the ultimate veto. I feel that this is something that should be looked at more closely, how many potential donations are wasted because the family couldn't bear to make the final decision? It should be legally taken out of their hands, perhaps not for children but certainly for adults.

By the way.....Hello Glaswejen, hope you're recovering well...good to see you back here again!

Yes, you can specify which organs you donate and which you keep!
