It's obviously aimed at the people who are perfectly able to donate, but choose to condemn others to death out of spite.
    As I thought, a fanatic.

def. fanatic. Someone who has fallen so in love with the journey that they have forgotten the destination.

I would be on the registar but why do they give organs to alcoholics and people who have missused drugs in the past. If i could be assured that neither types would be givenmy organs i would join.Everyone has a choice to make, mine is no until you can have a choice like that.

Im sure i will be shot down in flames for it!!

I have carried a donor card since I was 16.

The moment they introduce an opt-out system, I shall register to do so.

It will make no difference in the long run - most people are indeed too apathetic to opt-out which will be a good enough reason in the not too distant future for Doctors/the Government to feel they can say that all organs may be taken after death from every citizen.

Please do not delude yourself that donors are generally treated with 'respect' now (doctors show little respect for the living in many cases, why should they respect a cadaver?) - once they are allowed to harvest what they wish they can just drop the pretence they are forced to adopt at the moment.

Remember, as has been stated several times on this thread, the viability of some transplant organs depends on the donor being 'brain dead' rather than dead in the sense most people think of the state. Are you all so sure we know enough about the functions of brain to be absolutely certain you will be insensible when they extract your organs? Or that doctors will be that fussy about it if they don't have to concern themselves with any permissions before they perform these extractions?

For the record - I would donate a 'live' organ if it was viable.
I would not accept an organ, even now while I carry a donor card.
The people who are 'for' donation on this thread, in the main, sound far more unpleasant than the 'againsts' - throwing emotive, judgemental language around does not a cogent argument make.

    Totally agree.

On another thread on this subject, I bought up the matter of George Best - he was given a transplant even though there was no obvious reason to believe he would adjust his lifestyle in the necessary manner afterwards. Rumour certainly had it that he was permitted to bypass some of the more stringent conditions others in his condition are expected to comply with (I do realise this was suggested rather than proven)

Whoever died to provide Best with his second chance certainly did 'die twice' and the doctors colluded in this.

Alas the posters on the other thread were so very saintly I was considered totally unreasonable to suggest a drunken wastrel was not a good candidate for transplant, even though it is quite possible another person was deprived of their second chance.

The one comment I'd make on the thread is that under current rules, however strongly I may feel about signing the register (which I did as a teenager), however often I may have told my relatives about my wishes in that regard, they can nevertheless completely overrule those wishes.

I'd quite like the system to be changed at least so that someone who has made the positive choice to be on the register, has those wishes respected.

I'm happy to donate blood but I do not wish to donate my organs. My choice.

And your choice it is Rikki! :)

  • I think I'd rather donate my body to medical science as I feel that, long term, that is of the most benefit to humanity as a whole.

  • I personally think donating organs is a very great thing. To be able to save another's life. But there are many people who prefer to be buried with their organs I think is ok.

And if you tried to 'educate' me you would be able to donate your organs to someone much sooner than you thought:mad:

You would kill someone for trying to encourage you to save a life? I think we can safely ignore your opinions on this, you aggressive psychopath.
