I'm on the register, for everything except my eyes and my heart. Why? Because I just don't like the thought of it - that's the best reason I can give. If that makes me selfish then so be it, but that's not for other people to decide.

Whilst I'm living though, I donate blood regularly.
Tim i included my eyes but i doubt they will be of much use by the time they get them as they arent too good at the moment but you never know.:D
  • I'm more comfortable with being a living donor, I can give 1 kidney, part of my liver, 1 cornea, blood or bone marrow transplant to a family member or a match. But will now consider the possibility of registering my organs after death to someone in need, as I will be cremated anyways and they can use cadaver skin on burn victims as I understand. <
Not intended to be morbid sorry.

:Tagrees with you midsgurl on all youve said...I too am getting cremated.Just a point in question and not to be morbid either but when we sign the register do they use the skin automatically as with the rest of the organs or do we have to let them know this?
  • I used to feel that I wouldn't want them to have my corneas but now I think they can have anything. To be honest I'd like to be completely recycled... then someone can just plant a tree or stick my name on a bench to show that I was here if they wanted.

I wonder how people would feel about this if the system were opt-out and always had been, if we'd grown up with that. If it was the norm that anything usable would be automatically taken when we die, and we had to fill in a form or go to a website to withdraw permission for that, I bet most people just wouldn't think about it, or wouldn't be bothered, or wouldn't get round to it, just the same way most people don't really think about getting onto the register now.

I find it amazing that with all the efforts made to save lives, there's this huge untapped resource. Kind of the medical equivalent of all the tax we haven't recouped from big businesses...

Anyway, I've posted too much on this, it's just something I'm fascinated by, and I find it very difficult to understand the other point of view.

So are you advocating that it should be mandatory and people should not be allowed a personal choice?

Normally when people come out with something along the lines of 'we need to change our attitude' they mean 'you don't agree with my thinking and have to change'

To be fair changing attitudes in general is not always a bad thing, I remember when drinking and driving was tolerated sociallly, wife beating was ignored, racism was on the telly, homophobia was rife.

The 70s were like that all over the country.

I didn't tick the eye box either! I'm incredibly squeamish when it comes to eyes! However, I am thinking that I'd like to donate my brain and/or body to research. I'm obviously in a bit of a muddle ... :rotfl:

You will need to contact a university/teaching hospital/research lab now. We found, on my father's death, that they can not take a body at the point of death unless everything had been arranged beforehand.
