Hate the thought of saving another person's life? About giving a kid a few more years with their mum/dad? Well that just sums up why I feel how I do.

I don't know, I don't think that way, it was just an example among many.

I still don't think anyone has to justify why they can't/won't go on the register and I have no problem with it at all.

If, God forbid, one of my loved ones needed an organ, I don't think I'd complain about those who weren't on the register, I'd just be grateful for those who are on it.

But what about if said person dies because there wasn't enough people on the register?
  • Why would you choose not to though? What sort of person, who has the opportunity to save a life, at zero cost to themselves, would think "nah, actually I'm not going to bother"? It genuinely disturbs me.

Because of the psychological impact. The thought of organ donation to some people is truly terrifying. If someone has a phobia of being buried alive we don't criticise them for it.

I do think that an opt-out system of donation would be so much better than and opt-in it would differentiate between those who genuinely don't want their organs removed and those who are simply apathetic.

Exactly. It's literally a matter of life and death.

I'd be gutted obviously, but what could you do?!

I don't know anyone who is on it, or should I say it's not something I discuss with people to find out whether they're on it or not.

I'm on it and that's all that matters to me.

I will have a chat with my husband though to see if there is any particular reason for him not being on it, although if he doesn't want to go on it, I'll always respect his wishes.

I'm not on the register at the moment, mainly because I have a strong phobia about being cut open. Is that irrational? Probably so, but that doesn't lessen my fear.

That said, I don't hate the idea and should I get over my phobia one day, maybe I'll consider being on it. In the meantime I'm more than happy to give blood and I'm on the bone marrow register.

I've read through the thread and am a bit concerned at the idea that people who aren't on the register for reasons other than medical simply do it out of spite. I'm not on it, but it's certainly not out of spite.

without wanting to come across as the bully i've been labelled as in this thread (which i completely refute), why not grab a moment of 'bravery*' and sign up with the link in my opening post?

*i've tried to word that in the best way i could without sounding patronising or in a 'bullying' way. i think we all have strong fears, whether we like to admit it or not (for the record, mine is being buried alive. to the point i had to turn off kill bill vol. 2 and look away for the duration of the 'buried' trailer at the pictures) but just taking a minute to fill the form in now, send a quick text to your nearest & dearest letting them know you're on it and then just forget about it. job done. apologies if that does come across as patronising, it's not intended to :)

I can't believe the hospital would go to all trouble to fit a new kidney if it wasn't in perfect working order.
There aren't enough donated organs available for them to that picky:

    etc

If the choice is death or an organ that is probably OK, I suspect many people would prefer to take the chance.

I really don't care what happens to my body when I die, it can be cut up, burned, buried, eaten by cannibals, interfered with by necrophiles, or whatever. It won't bother me, I'll be dead, so won't know about it.

I'm happy to donate blood but I do not wish to donate my organs. My choice.

There is an awful lot of hot air in this thread.
    1. No-one has to justify themselves however tihs started as a thread asking why people did not join
    2. If you feel strongly you don't want to do this then whether your reason is good, bad or indifferent you have an absolute right not to and changing the system from opt in to opt out won't change this

We have become better at keeping people alive and in a reasonable state of health and one way of doing this is by transplant. I think this should be encouraged(but not forced). There may be good reasons for not donating but wheeling out the bogeymen i.e. medical students wandering about abusing spare parts, doctors not keeping you alive because they wish to harvest your organs and you not really being dead either rather suggests that there isn't really a good reason thgat can be advanced.
In the end if we switch to opt out those who feel strongly will do so but the number of organs donated will rise to everyone's benefit. If we do this then, of course, there need to be safeguards but in the current system there is no reliable evidence of medical staff behaving irresponsibly or criminally and I don't see why they should be that likely to start now.

Yep, can always rely on the medical profession to behave in an ethical manner:cool:
