what're your reasons for not being on the organ donor registry?

  • In my professional experience being involved with posthumous donation, the organ register per se is irrelevant, whenever we had a patient who was diagnosed with brain stem death, we ALWAYS discussed the option of donation with next of kin, we would never check the register first as it was meaningless, if NOK refused then the patient would be extubated and allowed to die naturally, if the NOK agreed then all the relevant checks and tests were performed and if still suitable the patient would be taken for donation.

So I find the whole issue around opting in and opting out totally irrelevant, ethically and morally clinicians will always discuss with relatives as it is such a sensitive thing and go by their wishes, I have known of numerous cases where patients themselves have carried a donor card but NOK have still refused as they just can't deal with it when they're actually in that situation and you have to respect their wishes even though you know it's not what the patient wanted.

i understand that not everyone has taken well to this thread, but honestly, i couldn't care less.

I'm sorry but you come across as rather an insensitive bully.

You 'couldn't care less' because you only want to hear what you wish to hear.

You're like a charity fundraiser who shakes their can in your face. You're off-putting, not at all welcome.

People have a choice what they want to do and your attitude does not help your cause one little bit.

i have found this thread very interesting and informative from those who wish to donate and those who dont.

millimonster, thankyou for your post, i will have a word with my family to ensure they know how i feel about my bits and bobs being donated.

i know i cant force them, but i would like to think they would know what to do when the time comes.

why are people offended by being asked why they are not donor register? ... no-one forced you to give your opinion. so i dont know why you are up in arms.

i believe it was posed to those who wanted to give their reasons as a matter of interest.

It was posed in an abrasive and rude way in my opinion. But you are entitled to your opinion too. By the way the little pointy up arrow "↑" at the end of your keyboard lets you do capital letters.

why don't you actually read the first post and other posts by the OP on this matter. No one has a problem with debate. its the fact that the OP has posted in an offensive way and in such a way as to ignore peoples feelings and viewsand they have happily said they are happy with this. You can ask someones opinion fair enough but basically call them stupid if they don't agree with yours isn't really a debate and won't change anyones views.

I thought you maybe could not find it, but I see you are just ignoring the conventions of the English language instead.

What a cute little act of rebelion; as long as it makes you feel important please keep doing it.

So you should be offended by the OP then. Or are you only offended by posters that don't agree with you then? Not an equal opportunities 'Offended' then.

As far as I can see the only ones being rude and caustic are those who think everyone should be willing to donate organs.

I don't see any of those of us who don't wish to be used as donors calling THEM stupid, spiteful or selfish ( all of which have been used in this thread although I think MSE has now deleted some of the nastier posts)
