My fastest wash is 32 mins at 30 degrees and does up 2 mins for every 10 degrees I go up. I use a whirlpool sixth sence washer, it has the minutes on it.

We had an American washer in the States and it took 30 minutes. Trouble is they are MASSIVE!

My current one takes 1 hour 10 minutes and has a hole in the seal of the door. It is 25 years old but works fine. Anyone know how to seal it up?

I love those american top loaders - would love one. They just look so cool and laundretteish.

  • I've got a Zanussi 1500 Aquacycle which takes a 6kg load, is cold fill only and was purchased just over a year ago. I usually use the 40 degree cycle and press the 'Extra Quick' button and it takes just over an hour to complete. It does take a lot longer than my old machine which was a Hoover and had a half load and economy button which I really miss.

You can get replacement door seals. We have a wonderful little shop here that stocks all sorts of bits and will order whatever they don't have in stock. You might have to order yours from the manufacturer if you don't have a place like this.

I salvaged a washing machine that had been left behind by a previous tenant once by buying a new door catch, it was a lovely Zanussi that lasted us for 7 years.

  • My Miele has a 40deg quick wash programme of about 30 mins.
Also for every other wash programme (apart from woollens) there is a short wash option which brings the wash time down to about 45-50 mins for a 40 deg cottons or mixed wash or synthetics.
I use the short wash option all the time.
Like you Simbasweetie I was concerned at the long wash times of some machines and remember searching in the drums of machines in John Lewis hoping to find manuals to study! It would really annoy me to have to regularly do a wash of an hour and a half!
I find my stuff is cleaned fine after a 45 min wash programme and see no need for anything longer unless something is really dirty.

Most German machines are cold fill only. Don't know about British ones.
But on machines with hot fill I was told the hot fill is only used on programmes of 60 deg and hotter anyway.

i have a zanussi ( not sure which one) and the shortest cycle i have is 35mins and it works fine. i can add 5 or 10 mins to it but doing an intensive rinse. also i have a hand wash which takes 35 mins or a cold wash for 41mins. but i have a daily wash which is 1 hours 4 mins. i must say i generally only use a daily wash. but if something needs a freshen then i do a quick wash for 35 mins. but bedding gets done on a slightly longer 40 degree wash.
  • I have a Hotpoint Aquarius washer/dryer which I usually use on quickwash which is 60mins for 60 degrees and 56 mins for 40 degrees. there is a fast wash which takes 30 minutes and you can adjust the temperature to suit. Works really well and much quicker than my last machine.

Whilst mopping the leak from my machine, I observed what it did.

One fill for washing, then lots of agitation. Then three rinses, then the spin cycle - this all took 1 hour 10 minutes. I usually go away and watch something and mentally note when the wash will be done. It would be nice to be able to prepare my meal, whilst waiting, in 30 minutes then put the washing out to dry.
