Right, it's going to cost me about £8.50 for the ferry on Friday afternoon as I won't be able to now use my ticket that I had booked in the morning - however, my friends who are going are going to see if there's anyone trying to buy a ticket when they go over to see if they can flog it that way for me!

However, discovered last night that my one & only suit is way to tight to wear to an interview, so am having a slight crisis - it's a fairly senior position I'm interviewing for, so ideally I should wear a suit, and although I could probably get one fairly reasonably in the outlet shops I don't want to have to spend out if I can possibly avoid it... Do you think it's OK to wear a dress with a jacket instead?

    Hiya Storm,
Just been reading this thread and keeping fingers crossed about the job. Can you borrow a suit or try your luck at a charity shop to see if they have anything that might fit. I guess if you're looking for a new job you shouldn't feel too bad about buying a suit as you'll get use from it. Good luck with the interview.

I've also posted a poll over on the employment & jobseeking board, so hopefully will get a load of opinions from there too. To be honest I doubt if I buy a suit I'll actually get to wear it much as the organisation is in the voluntary sector, works with children and deals with performing arts! However... as I'm applying for loads of jobs at the moment, if I don't get this one I'll have to suit to wear to loads more interviews!

Mmm that makes it more difficult because if you get this job you'll only wear the suit once. Maybe go for dress and jacket????? Something you might wear again???

What kind of dress were you considering wearing with the jacket? If it's a plain/fairly plain and sober dress with a smart toning jcket it should be OK. especially if you have the jacket fastened, they will only see the skirt part.

Good Luck. It sounds the perfect job for you. Please let us all know as soon as you have a result.

You can tell we're girls can't you? OK, as detailed a description of the dress as possible...

It's wraparound style (v.flattering to tubby people like me!), knee length & long sleeved. There is a print which is red & brown on a cream background, not too garish though. I've then got a brown suit jacket that still fits me that I was thinking of wearing over the top.

  • That sounds fine to me. I'd certainly risk it (from what it sounds like) to an interview. If you are comfortable in it and it makes you feel good wearing it (especially as you haven't had to spend money on it) that will make you feel a bit more relaxed about the interview. Then you can just concentrate on wowing 'em with your presentation. But if you feel at all 'wrong' about wearing it then don't. Not much help am I?

The only wrap dress I ever had was a total disaster because although it fit me perfectly when I was standing up, the flap part kept revealing a little too much leg whenever I sat down:eek: unless I sort of clutched it to me all the time!

This made me giggle! I've got a wrap-around skirt that's a nightmare for flashing my legs at people, but thankfully the dress has a wrap-style top bit, but the skirt is just a regular type skirt!

I've got tomorrow off work anyway & was intending on going to look for a hat for a wedding in a couple of weeks, so what I'll probably do is have a quick look around - if I see a cheap nice suit then great, otherwise I'll go with the dress.

Thanks for all the opinions guys - now I just need you to tell me what to say in the presentation & interview (hmm, wonder if I can sneak online during my preparation time for assistance...) :D

    I'm back!

Bad news first - I didn't get the job I interviewed for on Friday - I knew I hadn't done particularly well in the interview as it was the first one I'd ever had at a higher level like that, and the questions weren't quite what I was expecting! Still, interview practise is always good, and as I'd already had the day booked off work it didn't even use up any of my leave!

Been at the Isle of Wight festival, which was absolutely fab - just finished the most gorgeous shower of my life getting rid of all the grime from the weekend! The cost of stuff though was ridiculous - £2 for a small bottle of water! Thankfully they did have taps around, so in true MSE style I had taken a biggish one & just kept re-filling it... still managed to spend quite a bit though!

Hope everyone's OK - just going off to catch up on some diaries!
