I have had comms with the support staff and dont seem to be getting anywhere. This is a global issue and they are doing nothing to prevent it

Yes looking at their safety centre they do say to be wary of ukash but I dont think this is good enough. These ads are being posted from abroad that much is clear and looking at how easy the ads are being found there has to be a common denominator here, deffo the same IP range and it would take them two seconds to check and block certain IP ranges.

Anyway I would suggest maybe cheekychap drop an email to the following to highlight how large a scale this is and how their first line customer support are doing !!!! all about this

the scammers know the scam full well.
gumtrees customers, like mushrooms are kept in the dark and fed !!!!!!!!.
in my next post i am going to reveal how i managed to get all these scams uncovered if i get enough support from you and you will join with me in bringing this horrendous scam to an end
there may be people who say i should not but the facts are these.
its happenning as we speak ,gumtreee wont acknowledge it,
ukash makes money out of it on their commission and parcelforce do not care.
i hope people will not judge me and say you have opened it up to more scams gumtree is awash with it and has to address it.

I think it is despicable what is happening, have you emailed the above? They will not accepted anything from me as I have not been affected by this whereas I know you have.

I dont think UKASH can do an awful lot here though as they cannot stop customers from purchasing these vouchers at a till point as they dont know whether they are being bought with a view to fraud or whether for a legitimate reason. The source of the issue here is gumtree and they need to stop at source.

If EBAY watermarked the photos with EBAY and date stamp it would make it just that little bit harder - as at present the scammers are just lifting the photos from the completed list of ebay / halfing the price and posting them on gumtree with some word cropping and editing
this lot is just the tip of the iceberg and i have put them up to demonstrate the magnitude of the scam

The good news is Gumtree has implemented my recommendation to try reduce the risk of people being scammed, and Gumtree tweaked their “reply to this ad” web page. Now, if the scammer chooses NOT to want to provide their CONTACT NUMBER on their scam add, Gumtree will now NOT ask the “buyer” for THEIR contact number on the online REPLY FORM. And so, Gumtree is actively now trying to encourage “buyers” to only respond to such RISKY ads using Gumtree’s SECURE EMAIL first (which the scammers don't want to use!).

Top marks for Gumtree making this fix so quick. They listened. They acted. And, the speed of which “scam” adds are TAKEN DOWN is now much quicker than a month ago. This is a big improvement by Gumtree, as the ads ARE easier to spot!

Also, Gumtree HAVE improved their security advice pages. PLEASE ACTUALLY READ THEM IF YOU WANT TO BE UP TODATE ON NOT BEING SCAMMED on Gumtree! See post #377 (Pg 19) detailing Gumtree’s new excellent safety advice.

So, this means scammers have had to “adapt”. And this meas it is sometimes easier to spot scam adds, as cheekychap is doing so well in doing so… as the scammers are being forced to add text like the FOLLOWING… at the END and/or MIDDLE and/or the START of their ads with tell-tale phrases and when alarm bells should start ringing:

...each of the above are from different real scam ads that Cheakychap and others have identified and matched to actual old "sold" ads (e.g on eBay).

These scam ads now “look” like scam add… and they are scam ads! If you see such an ad please consider clicking Gumtree's "Report Ad" to alert them of possible fraud, e.g "Likely Ukash scam. Seller withholding any contact number on the ad, yet asking the buyer for their contact/mobile number suspiciously in the ad."

Gumtree are “flushing” out the scammers. Buyers can now “spot” them, when they couldn’t before. This is excellent progress.

DO NOT REPLY TO ANY ADD WITH YOUR “MOBILE” IF THE SELLER HAS NOT PROVIDED A CONTACT NUMBER ON THE ADD! INSTEAD REPLY BY SECURE EMAIL or concider using a “land line” number. Scammers do NOT like to talk to buyers. If they choose not to "talk" to you... ask yoursef why not?

If you provide a MOBILE the scam can start by TEXT… and the scammers will then ask the Buyer to contact them via an email (outside of Gumtree’s SECURE EMAIL SYSTEM).

There are other scams, where this advice will not help, but for the current UKash scam methodology, it should help.

In my situation when I saw the bargain advert I really wanted to be the first to buy it so I added my mobile number on the reply form as I had intended to go straight round to buy the item.

When it started to become a bit odd with the talk of dropping it off to me then never turning up I realised something wasn't right and ended up on this forum. They are just playing on the fact the item is such a bargain people will be desperate to buy it especially as people are short of money at this time of the year.

I think a genuine seller is keen for you to buy their item and will usually go out of their way to make this easy for you. Like emailing you back with their contact number or phoning you and arranging for you to go round to look at the item. If they are making it awkward for you to go and look at the item and talk about dropping it off to you it is probably safer to walk away. You wont be saving money but loosing it if you fall for the scam.

unfortunately some text is more innocent
and not using mobile~cantact ect
the reason that they are using the /mobil/ or running words together is to get round gumtrees weak security
for example two words the opposite of cow is b...
and what it does at its tail end is s... now put the two word together enter your post and this site shows it as !!!!!!!!
now if gumtree could do the same but flag up the ad to be examined and not posted till past - another filter
and ebay owned gumtree could do the following
1 watermark all pics ebay and date code
2 run a plaigurism check on all new adds against ebay back catalogue
just changing words or altering the grammer is not going to fool some of these pieces of software for ex
plagaware plagscan ithenticate academic plagarism urkund docoloc
3 gumtree should not acceppt any new registrations from people who supply an e-mail address without a checkable IP
these scammers have only been posting since nov/dec 2012
they get taken out when the scammed complain about the scammer and next day business as usual
4. no sellers from overseas without stringent checking paid for by the seller
5. in the page where you reply they could set up the same b..s... filter to filter out your mobile number- ignoring white space so that your number shows up as !!!!!!!! then if you the buyer chose to re enter your number it would have to be as letters ie nine nine nine ect
