I can confirm that this scam is being run from Budapest, Hungary so very unlikely anything can be done about it but Gumtree should be using due dilligence here and I see no reason why they dont just block the IP range from Budapest, I cannot see them losing anything in doing this as they dont make money from the free adverts and very unlikely that people logging on from over there would have something to sell here
that is interesting
my trail goes as far as an address in belgium verified by the met police
keyser666 can you give us as much information as you have please
cheers

• I also got this last week on Gumtree.
Fortunately I only wanted to collect and went to my post office to enquire when then sent me details about this rubbish.
It was at that point that i found this thread.
The advert is still up to my knowledge.

I think parcel force themselves should raise the flag on this as it sullies there reputation.

• keyser666 must be different e-mail address they are using
the deborah75regan@gmail.com ends at google in california
traced there using freely available software on the header of the e-mail. this only shows google california ie omits the senders ip address.it is the same for the courier-updates@post.com which is the fake parcelforce e-mail
when the met traced this to california google does not release the ip senders address unless under subpheono
my ukash vouchers were traced to an address in belgium with various betting sites one of which is bet365 (uk owned)
unfortunately my contact dealing with this is on leave so i can add no further info
it may indeed be linked to budapest but on that i have no knowledge
i am waiting to see what happens next
cheers

You have to remember email headers are not going to contain necessarily the IP address where the email is being constructed and where you are saying that they point to california that is consistent with gmails servers.

I dont see how bet365 released any info with regard to the UKASH vouchers.

With regards to the information I got, I sent emails purporting to be confirmation of the UKASH Voucher and I sent it to the tracking@post.com updates@post.com etc etc. As soon as they open these emails I get sent a report tellling me the IP address of where they are located when opening these. These are NOT the same as aread receipt and totally anonymous and the receiving person is unaware that they have sent the information back to someone.

As said I sent several over a few days and the IP was consitent
• yes they did keyser666
the met police have told me i have it in an met e-mail
and the bet sum was precicely £10
the other sums went to other betting agencies who have been contacted
trust me its been traced to belgium

I would imagine Ebay has far more scams on it, then gumtree by a country mile, but Ebay scams, seem to get little or no coverage in the grand scheme of things either.

Ebay is well protected against scams with paypal - for buyers that is. It's pretty much 100% that your money is safe when you pay using paypal; money is refunded by them and taken from the seller's bank account. However as a seller the same system leaves the seller at the mercy of scamming buyers claiming purchases "never arrived", who then claim refunds, so a seller can be scammed that way. This happened to me once only. Using a signed for service is the foil for that little con though, so overall its pretty much safe for a seller if you take that step.

Quite clearly, the UKASH scammers have been sourcing Ebay for pictures and text of goods to list on Gumtree at "bargain" prices though. UKASH needs to implement a paypal security system with its vouchers, but of course they won't as this scam is win/win for them as they make money whoever buys or cashes the vouchers.
• A simple way to check the validity of an ad on Gumtree at the moment is to copy the title of the ad and paste it into the completed item search box on ebay. As you all must know by now these scam ads are an exact copy of an item that has previously completed on ebay. The pctures used make it very quick to identify them.

As soon as I find one I report it to Gumtree, listing the original ebay item number, and so far the ads have been removed very quickly.

At the moment the scammers aren't using UK mobile numbers and have different actual locations to the ones that show on the ad. Simply ask to collect the item with cash and they will reveal their supposed location which won't match the ad.

Anything even slightly dodgy, report it as a scam.

Agree that ukash has a failed business model
started in 2005 won queens award for enterprise in 2012 for second year in succession.
but when you wipidea them ho ho the scams including gumtree come up.
thats 7 years on a business model that is now one of the top scammers paradise.
they are regulated by the FSA Financial services authority
and its just a matter of time until the FSA step in and say enoughs enough.
if everyone writes or phones the FSA and complains about ukash failed business model it could accelerate the process.
Treat ukash vouchers like cash - somebody just e-mailed me a £50 note so im off to spend it NO i dont think so
flawed and will be used by scammers for ever until changed
