Daft question time I expect - but is it okay to store food/drink in glass containers in the freezer please? Reason for request - wondering how I can buy organic passata (at 3/4 times the price of ordinary  as it is) without making it even dearer per dollop by having to throw most of it away in wastage (as it comes in such large containers that I would only want a little of it).

I'm thinking of using small glass bottles I have - okay, okay - mini wine bottles since you ask!

    Glass cracks in the freezer.

For cheap containers for things like this - if you get milk in those 2 ltr plastic containers - just cut the bottoms off (clean them, obviously) and top up to whatever level or portion size that you like.

Just make sure that they stand up safely in the freezer until frozen.

The left over top can be cut back a bit and used as a large funnel too.

Or you could freeze passata in ice cube trays and then put into freezer bags or 'takeaway' containers. You'd have to keep one set of ice cube trays purely for that because it would almost certainly stain, but hey!

  • I'm in the process of making apple chutney but have just had a taste and it tastes too vinegary. I used the correct amount but the taste of the vinegar is too overpowering. Is there anything I can do to salvage my big vat of chutney?

    Any advice gratefully received.

I bought the smartprice sheets at the weekend and had them last night and they were lovely! They actually tasted better than the usual sainsburys ones we get. And they cooked through fine in the sauce. Not bad for 25p!

It doesn't often happen, but I have found a pot of houmous at the back of the fridge. The use by date is today, but I don't think we're going to manage to eat it all (if any of it) today. It hasn't been opened, which is why I'm reluctant to chuck it.

My question is, will it be OK to leave it till tomorrow and use it? I'll obviously do the taste/smell test first.

I'm inclined to give it a go, but wondered what the general consensus from you guys was.

    Thanks a lot
    D.
  • I had similar last week, but it was a day before the date. It didn't look as 'smooth' as usual but tasted OK and I'm still here to reply to you ............
