Cant afford to attend sisters wedding abroad.

I doubt that would happen, but even if it did, doesn't everyone have the right to spend their money on whatever they want?
Just like a bride and groom have the right to choose were their wedding is held?
I doubt it would happen either. Which is why I thought it was an odd thing.
Yes they can spend their money on what they want. If thats a new sofa to match their new wallpaper so be it. But I would put my sister before a new pattern on a sofa, thats what Im saying. And I know she would do the same for me.
If it was someone I hadnt seen for 25 years it could be different I suppose?0 -

But it's done well as OH has had it for over 10 years now!
10 years is pretty good. Although I reckon mine is probably that old now I think about it. One sofa is the ebay one so goodness knows, and the other is a hand me down from my Grandad, and its actually a sofa bed, and I remember sleeping on it when I was about 10, which makes it 17 years old! He only used it as a sofa bed though so it hasnt actually been used, as in sat on every day, for that long technically.0 -

Ours is a sofa come guest bed, as we have no space for anything else! lol. So it's seen a lot of sitting down AND people sleeping on it.
I'll be sad to see it go to be honest.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

I would hate to get rid of mine too actually as it reminds me of my Grandad. So I think if it ever starts to get to the point where we cant use it as our sofa, (although I dont think that will be for years yet) we'll keep it to use in a spare room (when we hopefully buy a house in a few years) purely to use as a sofa bed. As Im sure the sofa bed part will last a lot longer than the cushions etc.0 -
Well my second wedding which was 37 years ago now was a very low key affair. The most expensive thing was the wedding cake £30.
Even weddings here now are an astronimical sum. Our daughter got married in 2006 and it cost £14,000 all in (we didn't pay for all of it by the way).
Even to attend a wedding in the UK it's probably going to cost quite a few hundred with present, outfits plus they never seem to get married near where they live anymore so that includes travelling expenses and hotel accommodation.
Before that of course is the weekend away (hens and stags) another huge expense.
I know you shouldn't think this way, but a good percentage of these marriages break up after all this money was spent.
Bring back the old days I say. We got married in a registry office in the morning, went shopping in the afternoon and had a little party at home in the evening.0 -
re sofa versus boiler...I have four antique sofas....and no boiler. Its a bout priorities for different people and events happening unexpectedly or not to schedule. We wanted a boiler this year...then the dog broke its leg. Our priorities changed. The wedding in US is probably lower priority than a boiler for next winter though.0

How are you finding it now, temp wise? I know you were already finding it very cold a few weeks ago. Fingers crossed winter isn't so cold this year!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
I am loving the fact that this has now turned in to a sofa thread

you're very sweet to remember.:o Its complicated by that as well as the rotten summer I also have hypothyroidism (because the rest of my body broke it was inevitable as it runs in my family but has just struck me really early for my family) so I quite often struggle to keep warm. Its been much milder this week though.
My thermals are back in the drawer this week. I have a woodburner in one room, so can get one room nice and toasty when needed. I bought some great fleece pjs from ASDA which are really warm, especially worn one pair over another:rotfl:. we've also had a temporary repair done which has totally sealed the newer alarming crack in the kitchen, which has helped a lot because the house is a little less draughty but we still have other gracks for ventialtion:rotfl::rotfl: I should imagine in four-eight weeks time I'll be rather grumpy though:o:D
