I apologise if this has been mentioned before. But we go camping a lot and we invested in one of those mini kettle BBQ's (with a lid). They can be a BBQ/grill and/or an oven. They really work a treat!0

One I just dug out that should be perfect for camping cooking - pancakes (fluffy/American style ones).
2-3 tblsp plain flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 tblsp milk powder, sugar to taste (i use about a flat tblsp). Mix in one egg, water to make a fairly thick batter, sultanas if wanted. Pour into pan, cook til bubbles rise through, flip, cook til done.
This amount makes 1 large fluffy pancake (I use a small 'omelette' pan that's about 6" diameter).
I haven't made this while camping yet, just at home (as it's 'single serving' amounts) but it strikes me as being perfect as you use powdered milk, and can pre measure everything into bag(s)?
Edit: worked perfectly. I actually tripled the above amounts, added a handful of sultanas to each bag, and made it up while camping with 2 eggs (not 3) and water.0 -

BUMPING!"
We go camping on Monday and need some cheap camping reciepes!""Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." Jane Austen.

Well we just got back from a long weekend camping and these are the meals we had on site:
day 1: bbq (just a disposable one from the poundshop) - quorn chicken strips, veggie skewers and asparagus, panini rolls with tomato pesto and cheese (wrapped in foil, they go crispy and the cheese melts), and bananas, split in half with choccie pushed in the middle, wrapped in foil and 'baked' on the bbq.
(the quorn chicken strips are brilliant, i imagine you can do the same with real chicken nugget/dipper type things... but these are fab in a wrap with lettuce and mayowhich would be very easy to do while camping!)
day 2: brekkie was pancakes (see recipe above, worked perfectly) with chocolate spread and bananas.
Late supper of sausage and cheese paninis (were out all day).
day 3: cold breakfast, dinner was curry (cooked at home and stuck in coolbox frozen) with naan bread (bbqd). As an experiment I put the pan of curry on the bqq to see if it would reheat, and yes it did so perfectly so didn't need to use gas cooker as well.
day 4: fry up for brekkie - toast, scramble, beans, sausages and mushrooms.
dinner was pasta, tomato pesto and cheese.
We used disposable bbqs (from poundshops) loads, they're brilliant for camping and as I discovered you can reheat stuff in a pan on it too.0 -
any pages around here with camping meal ideas ive got a gas stove thing - was going to make a corned beef pie/ spag bol / bbq stuff /stir fry but need a few more ideas for quick and cheap campside cooking (something a bit more than tin of beans though-lol)BR as of 14/1/2009

We've just come back (there were 11 of us - my friend and I cooked for us ALL on two gas rings!!).
Curry - frozen or whoopsied chicken, peppers, onion, mushroom, jar of sauce, now we did rice but it was a bit rubbishm so next year we are going to do naan breads heated in frying pan
Pasta with onion, bacon and mushrooms with cream cheese stirred through
BBQ - Party disposable ones, burger and sausage each (chipolatas cook quicker)
For breakfast we did beans and sausage (from a tin) with crusty bread to dip, cereal (as a treat the small boxes) and the co-op round the corner for milk
Hope this helps!!

Spikes Compo Stew;
You need;
Tin of beans & sausages or Meatballs
Tin of button mushrooms
Tin of new Potatoes
Small tin of chopped Tomatos.
Oxo Cube
Dash of Tabasco sauce
Bung it all in a mess tin,crumble the oxo cube & a dash of Tabasco,stir & eat.This can also be eaten cold.
In my Army webbing,I carry a little box of little sachets of spices like curry powder,chili powder,crushed chili flakes,ready ground S&P & dried Italin herbs.
It allows me to change the same meal into a variety of meals very simply by adding the spices.I also carry little sachets of Toamato,brown,mint ect sauce that you get in resturants.0 -
I love the beans & sausages with tinned new potatoes meal - I shop around for the cheapest tins of both and buy a load in when they're cheap, ready for meals to make out camping or at the moment, while I'm rennovating and decorating the kitchen ( = camping in the living room!!)
Another lovely camping style meal is pasta, cubes of cheese (we like Lancashire or Cheshire, slightly warmed so it goes sort of soft but not melted) and thin strips of german salami or pepperami/chorizo tossed in a pan to crisp slightly. If you're flush you can add some olives, toss the lot together... total comfort food! Also nice cold.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.
