When we had our static caravan one of the kids favourite meals was 'Dads Fry Up'!
all you need is one ring and one large frying pan!
Oh would start with a few leftover boiled potatoes cubed.
    then add a chopped onion
then add a few rashers of bacon roughly chopped up and fry all that til browned and crispy
add either any leftover veg or frozen peas (static - had a freezer compartment for the peas).
open a tin of corned beef cube that up and add to frying pan (I said it was a large one). let that go brown a bit.
then crack a couple of eggs and add to pan - stir it all around and when eggs were cooked - Supper was served!

edit to add - bit of brown sauce and some bread and butter and it was surprisingly delish!
  • We've sat there with our steamer going on our Coleman stove, enjoying a nice chilled glass of wine outside our tent, and people have walked by saying things like "some people have no idea about camping" and then proceed to get in their car to drive out for a meal.

I don't find that odd, why do people find me cooking, odd?

If we go away for a week we eat out probably 2-3 times but am happy to cook. And we have brekkie (sozzies & eggs, bacon sarnies, or if we're planning on going out, just cereal and bread and butter) sarnie lunch and the last time we camped, 2 weeks ago, we had loin of lamb with lentils, feta & mint. Have done Spag Bol, steak & (shallow fried) chips...

Saying that, we've also happily eaten tinned meatballs, chicken supreme etc.

I think the best thing we bought was our camping fridge. A nice chilled beer once you've pitched is our fave thing. And we time from getting out of the car right to popping that beer... we don't pop until were 100% ready. We're sitting at 40 mins with tent fully erected, beds made, car fully unpacked, lights in place, kitchen area sorted, fridge lit and in it's own tent (fishing umbrella) , chairs and table out in position... it's a personal target now, lol!

just sounds great, can I come?

seriously though this will be our first family holiday since DMP and really looking forward to it but a little scared with no recourse to the credit card. I'm a good cook and have been planning meals; obviously chilli and the like are easy and cheap and have been making up little spice packs to make this easy. I intend to take the bread maker with pre-weighed flour (sad or what!) but bread is v expensive in the village we're staying in and its a long way to the nearest town so something on toast will always be a fall back plus breakfast etc. Also have a small bbq and will make my own burgers "takeaway secret" style just need the weather!

I've also squirreled away enough for the odd pasty lunch, fish and chips and a cheap carvery meal so should all balance out.

I have an electric cool box with a plug in adaptor so that will make life easier too but any more tips gratefully recieved!

    Our camping meals consist of...
first night we have a hm frozen meal ready to heat up, usually chilli/curry with rice or pittas.
    Other meals include:
Carbonara -tins of tuna/sweetcorn/mushroom soup served with pasta
A jar of bol sauce with pasta
BBQ -sauasages, burgers, kebabs, smores etc
Tin of meatballs served with noodles
    Toasted sandwiches
    Fry up
    Cheesy beans on toast
    veg hotpot with bread
and we usually have a couple of takeaways or eat out.

Another treat is sachets of hot choc with a dash of Baileys :D

We have a caravan and I wouldn't go away without my CADAC BBQ now, it's wonderful and has lots of attachments. From Fajitas, BBQs, casseroles, breakfast it goes on there. Must remember next time I wake up still drunk to change from BBQ to griddle for eggy bread, doh!

When we have electric my George grill gets some hammer, why should I use my gas? We use it for fried breakfasts (has hotplate side) and just about everything else. My friend takes her halogen oven and slow cooker every time but my kids aren't really wet food kids. I'm looking at buying a halogen oven and if I'm away more than a week somewhere I may take it with me. We usually do 4 days at a time and the odd 10 night block

What I do tend to do is take the following in a freezer box

Cooked roast meat, yorkshires and veg - all left overs from other meals - means we can have a roast dinner just reheat it all
BBQ meats - yes I'll BBQ in the snow so of course I'll do it in the rain
Pasta sauce - some form of HM then frozen sauce for pasta then just cook the pasta while I am there (always boiling rice in electric kettle to save gas where possible) usually served with warmed bread
Chilli/curry/chinese dish in sauce - all will go with rice I take with me and some naan, prawn crackers or nachos

Anything that needs a lot of prep isn't my idea of a holiday so I tend to take those sorts of things with me. I have been known to cheat and use a pasta sauce from a jar on the odd occasion. When I do that I tend to buy cooked chicken or take cooked/browned meat with me
One day I might be more organised...........

    Yay another cadac owner.

We are off to Denmark and Sweden on Friday - for a fortnight. That means i can't take any fresh food with me - overnight on a ferry with no electric and i think you can't import anyway. I'll just take my tea bags with me and my son's soya milk and a few biscuits and squash but that's it. I do like foreign supermarkets and that is always fun for me - i collect the shopping bags too. A nice cheap holiday souvenir.

We do a lot of BBQ's and paella, and often will simply have "cold cuts" with a fresh loaf and a glass of wine (that's one of your 5 a day - right? :rotfl:) and some fruit. Eaten outdoors, everythng tastes better. There seems to be a lot of pickled fish around in Sweden though which concerns me :D
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Last time me and a few mates were in a mountain bothy (so a sort of camping) on Skye (Camasunary) - it was one of our guys birthdays.
The bothy has a big table and a two small fireplaces but a very limited supply of wood.
We did a double journey in, first one rucksacks sleeping bags, ordinary camping food (dried stuff and the odd can) but on the second journey in after walking back in trail order (survival bag and water bottle each and empty rucksacks)
We took a full topside and lamb loin, a huge salmon , spuds, onions, carrots, mustard, peppercorns, cream, butter, lemons, wine boxes. whiskey and whisky, plastic glasses, my Japanese chef knives, a big skillet and a full sack of coal (in my rucksack) over the mountain pass to get in to the bay the bothy is in. There is already always a huge pot there.

Some German and Spanish walkers that evening were astounded to be greeted with drinks and the offer of cigars and even more so to be given the choice of a freshly cut steak, chop or salmon steak with sauteed potatoes and boiled carrots with pepper or mustard sauce or fresh lemon slices.

I like your style but I've never managed to make a decent peppercorn sauce yet, care to share a recipe and I might do these nice rumps one night when we are away :)

VJsMum your trip sounds wonderful, I haven't managed to convince my partner to go that far yet :(

I had a friend question how much I cooked using a proper oven etc when away on a camp site, I asked what they used, oh we have a hob meal occasionally but we go out for tea to pubs or chippy etc.....must cost her a fortune and less 'down to earth' which is what she criticised me for not being
