Thanks for all the recipes and ideas - we are off camping again at the weekend and are, as usual, doing the basic non-electric camping we prefer. Have already planned our traditional chicken curry for first night (cooked up at home the night before and reheated once the tent is up)
Also have the stewing steak, new pots and tinned veg tea ready for emergencies. Porridge is a family fav for brekky and fry ups too. Have a one ring cooker so all planned on one pot where possible or keeping warm over boiled water if needed.
Have checked out the area and found a local market and sainsburys within spitting distance so plan is to nip into sainsburys on way back from days out and cook up whatever is going cheap, and buy something yummy for brekky at the same time. If all else fails there is an indian, a chinese, an italian, 2 pubs and a chippy also within a 4 mile radius (not very mse but might come in handy in our current climate!)Mortgage £119,533 going down slowly

Not what you're asking for, but did you see the Mail on Saturday magazine? I hate the rag, but my eye was caught by this feature, and now I'm tempted by the 'campfire bread' recipe. Mind you, whoever takes '200g plain flour' with them??

Try this ...
THREE TIN STEW
Cheap, quick and easy, and also delicious, warming and filling. Useful as an emergency meal, especially if you have no water supply, as it uses the water in the tins. Also useful for camping or caravanning. Not recommended for backpacking, though.
Makes 4 x 250ml bowls
INGREDIENTS
1 tin of stewed steak in gravy
1 tin of new potatoes in water
1 tin of carrots or peas in water
Ground pepper to taste
METHOD
Open the tin of steak. Put the steak and gravy into a saucepan.
Open the tin of potatoes. Drain the water into the saucepan. Cut the potatoes into 2cm (1 inch) pieces. Add the potatoes to the saucepan.
Open the tin of carrots or peas. Add the peas or carrots and the water to the saucepan.
Stir thoroughly.
Put the saucepan on a medium heat. Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat until it is just boiling (simmering). Put the lid on the saucepan and continue to cook for 5 minutes until the potatoes are cooked.
Season with the pepper.
ADDITIONS & ALTERATIONS
Use both a tin of carrots and a tin of peas.
Add a beef stock cube.
Add a teaspoon of dried parsley.
TIPS
If any of the potatoes are damaged, mash them up and add them to the saucepan. They will help to thicken the stew.
PS. I've also just done the most unauthentic, but quick, easy and delicious seafood paella for two from a pack of golden vegetable savoury rice, a pack of frozen diced white fish, a pack of frozen prawns, a fresh red pepper and 100g of frozen peas. Chop the pepper, make up the rice according to the instructions on the packet and throw everything else in.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
