My Waitrose card

  • Am I reading this right? Waitrose and Iceland are just handing out a card that you swipe at the till, gives nothing in return and they get valuable marketing informaton about our shopping behaviour?

And why do you think Tesco & Sainsburys have their loyalty cards? Yes you get points but the value in the information they get about your shopping habits far outweighs the money they give you back (which they get the manufacturers to subsidise anyway). I worked at Teco HO for a few months a couple of years ago, saw some of the Clubcard data and spent some time with the analysts - its quite scary what they know about you and how they manipulate you into buying exactly what they want you to buy. One of the many reasons I no longer shop there.

The only difference between them and Waitrose is that at least Waitrose is honest about their reasons for wanting you to have the card in the first place.

You missed my point, it's a known fact that all supermarket cards are used to collect data, the only difference is that some give you something in return for your data, others don't give you anything.
And I find it surprising that people are happy to allow them to collect data about them, and get nothing in exchange.

One annoyance I'm having - missus & I would like to carry duplicate card so whoever does a shop will gather 'points' or whatever to the same Waitrose loyalty card account. This is how we work it with Tescos who even issue additional key fob barcode thingies.

There are some perks with My Waitrose. Not many, I'll grant you, but for those perks they're more than welcome to any information about me they gather.

It will tell them that most of the stuff we buy there is heavily reduced, that most of the food we eat must have been bought elsewhere (though they won't know it's from Aldi), but that we do buy a lot of expensive cheeses. Oh, and a fair bit of strong Canadian flour.

And if you're reading this, Waitrose, you can probably work out from that precisely where I live and who I am. Let me compliment you, then, on your local store - it's a pleasure to shop there, and the staff are wonderful. :)

But that way you only get half the vouchers/free drinks etc. ;)

  • Just wanted to remind people about this card. I got about £4 off my shopping a couple of days ago - no reason it just applied when I handed over my card. I got my permanent card yesterday with a £5 voucher. Best of all though IMO is the free latte I have several times a week - I really look forward to this. I do think some people are beginning to abuse this though as I observed a man last week with free coffee, on his laptop and making business calls, and of course he was occupying a table for 4!!

Well I haven't had a Christmas card or any kind of discount voucher and I shop there 2-3 times per week - not just odds and ends, but my main shop:(

I wonder why they don't seem to have any continuity in what they send out to cardholders.

Their computer's probably working on the basis that it doesn't need to send you any incentives for you to carry on shopping at Waitrose.
  • Another perk with the myWaitrose card is that on certain products around the store, 10% is deducted from it's price when the card is scanned at the till. The free hot drink is limited to one per day and you can get a free newspaper every day as well, don't think it matters which one.

I noticed today that my Waitrose now has an automatic, free coffee/drinks machine installed next to the C/S desk?? Didn't have time to investigate but wondering how this works.....? Anyone else used one? :o
