If the OP was to have it redelivered, and managed to get it in herself with no particular fuss, would the responses here change?
    Yes.

Are you suggesting that is what the OP should do?

    Or are you talking hypothetically?

They probably had the furniture guy's name etc handy as they use him regularly. I wouldn't see anything sinister in it. Have you called to see how much they charge?

We had the same problem ten or so years ago and got our whole front window removed to get it in - cost about £200ish (I think). We had to get it removed again the following year when we moved house.

Very stressful at the time, but once the sofa is in, it's all behind you. Call the guy and just get it sorted - it's not worth fretting about. It's an easy mistake to make and certainly one that furniture stores are not unfamiliar with.

My point exactly. If this is a common problem, why do they not print size of each sofa/chair on the invoice, and ask the question about door width when they ask about stairs etc?

And please, don't bother making a smart comment about it being my responsibility to check door widths etc. Having never ordered a sofa before, how was I supposed to know that? And their terms and conditions say nothing about it being my responsibility. I don't have psychic powers. Beds are standard sizes, why not sofas??

harveys have cards along side the sofas/chairs they sell will all the sizes clearly printed on them.

  • my daughter has had the same problem last thursday, she was at work so i waited for the delivery, it woudnt even go through the front door, but no problem for delivery men, took the door off, then had to take sitting room door off as well, they told me it happened every week so they carry all the tools, it was well done to those 2 men from scs even though they moaned all the time about the size of sofas

We had simular when our DFS sofa turned up but the workmen just whipped out an electric screwdriver and took off the middle door which was the problem. The sofa itself didn't have the feet on-they unpacked it and screwed the feet on when in. Then they stuck the door back on and off they went-2 lovely blokes who chatted to us and the kids all the way through and wished us a merry crimbo just before they went (dec 23rd last year).

Now DFS messed us around with keep putting delivery dates back, but it was due to the heavy snow. But the delivery guys were fab. Unless your doors are particularly narrow or the sofa particularly huge, usually delivery guys can and do have all sorts of ways to get them in.

As I don't have any knowledge other than what the OP has posted, I can only talk hypothetically. The OP is the only one in a position to know what resources she has available to help her get a sofa through a door.

What I am saying is that, having moved home 8 times in the last 13 years, to various shapes of houses, with at least 4 different sofas in that time, I've never bothered to measure doors, and never had an issue getting a sofa through them. Nor have any family members or friends who I've helped with house moves.

Based on nothing more than my own experience, I would suggest that most sofas fit through most doors. Personally, I would look with suspicion at the kind of delivery driver who likes to suck air through his teeth before saying "that'll never get in there, love."

I bought a sofa last year. A 2 seater and a 3 seater. Delivery guys came, 2 seater went in no problem. The 3 seater was a different story. They had to get it up the stair and round a corner and it just wouldn't fit. They wrestled with it for about 1/2 an hour until they finally called it a day and gave up. I managed to call the store and change my order to get another 2 seater instead of a 3.

I didn't blame the store for my issue. Just one of those things. Luckily the store (not Harveys) were very accomodating and allowed me to change my order and even refund me for the difference in price.

The delivery guys made a right mess of my stair walls trying to get the sofa in, deep scores in the plasterwork but I have to just live with that as I should have done my homework first.

I also heard that the delivery guys don't even have to bring the item into your house (I don't know how true that is).

To be fair to the OP, even if I measured my doors and ceiling heights and angles, I wouldn't have the mathematical wherewithall to work out if the sofa would be manoevreable into place. A right angled piece of furniture might go through a door but not round a corner and I wouldn't know how to work it out.

But I bet you could figure out if it would be close or go in easily. If it would be close then a decision could be made to take the gamble on it on not.

I think an update is in order op :)..............................
  • I haven't read all four pages, but I had a similar issue with Cargo over a sofa (although a corner not 3 seater)

Now, I was sensible enough to measure the room, doorways, stairs etc. and to the best of my knowledge it would fit. Anyway, come delivery day it wouldn't turn the top of my stairs due to banister position.

Long story short, I complained that I had been more than reasonable in measuring everything and asked them to show me how, with the dimensions they list on their website (which didn't give dimensions of each piece, just the whole unit) to calculate whether it will turn a corner, taking into account the angle of the stairs, the ceiling slope etc.

As I expected they just came back with how to calculate the hypotenuse, I argued that it still wasn't enough, and i'd basically need an exact replica to know if it would fit.

Ultimately after a month of discussion including emails from the MD at Cargo at 3am, I got a full refund minus delivery cost.

The lesson learnt in all of this - view it in store, buy it online - that way if it didn't fit it wouldn't matter, DSR kicks in.

The thread I opened at the time is here although I forget what it says! https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3175694
