At no point did I "kick off".

Incidentally, regarding an earlier post - if they have instructions on their website re: what you need to measure, why do they not give someone who purchases in store the same instructions?

    You said
"but told the staff member today that I either want them to pay for upholsterer or to cancel my order."

That is unreasonable, they don't spell it out because most people know that sofas and houses vary in size so measure and measure again to ensure it fits. You need to find a solution not try to wriggle out of the responsibility.
  • This thread is brilliant, I am not sure there has ever been one on Consumer Rights where the OP has been this far in the wrong and in denial.

I am slightly suspicious as to whether this is actually a troll thread. Do people actually have so little common sense? You think it is the shops responsibility to make sure something fits into a house that they have never seen???

  • Guys the OP said the sofa wasn't in the store so that takes measuring the sofa out of the question and the measurements on the internet were wrong

Be thankful you didnt buy the sofa in a sale, many years ago I had a similar experience, sofa was delivered and del guys couldn't get it into house, they told me had it been a sale item, they would have to leave it on the drive / front garden and I would be our responsibly to get it into the house.

But she only looked AFTER they'd tried to deliver it.

It she'd have looked before, measured her door, used the measurements of the website to choose a sofa that would fit then found it didn't fit the shop would have been liable to recitfy the situation. But she didn't.

Does the sofa have feet? Sometimes if it's only a little tight, removing the feet is enough?

This. There's usually a way, and not always one that is intensive or destructive. :)

Note: only works if the feet are meant to be removable. ;)

I bought my first sofa mail order with nairy a second thought about how it was going to get into my house.

Two very gruff Welsh guys turned up with it. Within a few seconds they realised that the narrow hallway in my Victorian terraced house wasn't going to be wide enough and within another few minutes had the bay window out and the sofa in that way.

They'd obviously delivered a lot of sofas.

The size of my front door didn't occur to me once when I ordered it.

I do have some sympathy for the OP, but she is in the wrong. The upholsterer may not be as expensive as she's imagining.

When you buy a car does the salesmen ask the size of your garage?

This is completely irrelevant, but when my parents bought their new car, yes, the salesman did ask this! He asked it specifically because a customer had previously had this problem. And that's sort of my point - Harveys know this is a consistent problem with their sofas, it wouldn't kill them to ask the question.

    It's a perfectly apt example.

The responsibility is still yours despite how much you protest!

    what is standard?!

standard height door is 6'6", standard width is 28", seeing as you asked, although some internal doors in older houses are only 26" wide, some in larger houses or those designed to be accessible for wheelchairs are 30".
