Sofa is average size 3 seater sofa. Had I been buying a corner sofa or something I could see your point about measuring, but honestly if this sofa won't go through my front door it won't go through hardly anyone's! I spend half my life measuring door widths (I work with people in wheelchairs) so know when a doorway is narrow. Mine certainly isn't.
Call me naive, but I've never done this before. I'm a first time buyer, never owned my own furniture before. If they hadn't asked anything about access I might have said fair enough, I should have considered it, but between the fact that they ask questions re: access (corners, steps, etc) and they don't give dimensions of sofa anyway, I thought it must be standard size! They got a double bed base in my house no probs, so didn't expect a sofa problem! I did know the door widths before I ordered the sofa, didn't realise that sofas aren't standard sizes like beds. And I knew there had been a 3 seater sofa in here before, because there is a picture of one in the estate agents info about the house!
The fact that there was a 3 seater in the house before means nothing. What made you think sofas came in standard sizes? There are a variety of widths, depths, designs, lengths etc etc
It is your responsibility so you don't really have a leg to stand on I'm afraid. If I was you I'd be telling them you didn't realise and either taking the window out or trying to arrange with them to let you have a different sofa instead and measure first!!If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -

Ain't got a couch to sit on either! :rotfl:0 -
I had a similar problem a few years back. Although the sofas I'd ordered were the same size as my existing ones, I did not take into account the fact that I'd replaced by old wooden door with a uPVC one, which had a smaller frame! We took the door off, but they still wouldn't come in. Taking the window out was too expensive.
I am now stuck with my old sofas until they fall apart, as I can't get them out!0 -

We're not allowed, it's against the forum rulesPls be nice to all MoneySavers. There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

I expect the manager was quick to recommend an upholsterer because it's a common problem... and I expect the delivery guys normally take that particular sofa through patio doors because only people with patio doors order it.
Would the manager allow you to change it for a different model?Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

and if he does, make sure you measure everything in sight;)0 -
I have seen some huge sofas get through impossibly small spaces. There's usually an angle that will get it through
You must have been seriously unlucky for it not to fit
I am one of those people with easy access to the garden and large patio doors thankfully. No more first floor flat with instant 90 degree bend to get through!0 -
There's no such thing as a standard house, or standard sofa. Sofas these days tend to be quite big, the upholsterer suggestion is a good one, i'd take it if i were you, you're not going to get anywhere with the shop manager, they probably had a bit of a laugh when you left. It is your responsibility to make sure it fits, not theirs.0

This is true. A different delivery team might have got it in.
We had our bay window taken out when our sofa arrived and again when we moved.
The sad fact is, rooms are getting smaller and furniture is getting bigger.
I'd find out how much the upholsterer will cost."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
