There's a huge "lets keep chickens" thread on here somewhere. I got two in March and love them, wish I'd had them years ago. Tons of eggs and still laying now. Mine are in a netted pen with a big cosy coop and they just potter around in there digging , and they "sunbathe" on the coop roof. Feed is £6 a sack, and they like their greens
Also there's a fabulous wee forum called "Down the Lane" thats full of chickeny stuff.
thank you :T0 -

Is there any chicken lovers on here tonight please
DH has a friend at work who is moving to Scotland and does not want to take his chickens with him so he has asked us if we would like them.
How do you look after chooks?
How much are vet bills/ do they need inoculations?
How much does it cost to feed them?
On what do you feed them?
Does it cost more to look after them than the eggs cost in the shop?
Anything else I need to know?

How do you look after chooks? They need secure housing. Will you get the coop with the chooks?
Other than the housing, it's just a case of letting them out in the morning and feeding them, pretty much the same as you would if you had a cat, dog, rabbit.
How much are vet bills/ do they need inoculations? We've only taken one to the vet and that cost more in vet fees than the meds. Most chicken keepers let nature take its course.
We've lost 4 darling girls, but if you keep livestock, you have to be prepared for deadstock.
We've got most of our chooks at POL (Point Of Lay), but did buy some 6 week old chicks so have never innoculated. That would be done at day old.
How much does it cost to feed them? How many are there?
On what do you feed them? We use Allen and Page Smallholder layers pellets. They're more expensive (about £10 a 20k bag) but we've found that it's worth it in the quality of eggs that we get.
Does it cost more to look after them than the eggs cost in the shop?
Probably, if you include the start up costs. But once you've paid that, the difference in egg quality and the joy that you get spending time with the girls more than outweighs the initial cost.0 -
I couldnt do a link to the chicken thread, thanks Aesop! And I think GV's approach is very wise. I wouldnt spend a fortune hauling hens back & fwd to a vet because I think it stresses the hen and also vets aren't that great at chickens. I'm a great believer in hands-on healing and loving care.0

Afternoon all.
I don't know what it's like elsewhere but it's been decidedly dismal and chilly on the south coast today. It's the first time it's really felt like winter to me, which has at least prompted me to get on with ordering some Christmas presents (so far I've got two, so I really need to get on with it). I'm trying to remember to do as much as possible via a cashback website - usually I only remember after I've placed the order, by which time it's too late.
I've now got my Amaz0n bargain mouse up and running - I've been leaving it until the weekend as I thought it was going to be complicated to set up, but it was actually just a case of plug in and go.
I hope everyone's having a pleasant day - queenie68 and shegar - I hope you're both doing OK.Back after a very long break!0 -
Having a moan - ignore if you wish
My SIL is coming any moment now with her 2 kids. She is coming to go to her sister's birthday party (we've been invited too), and then to a family party tomorrow (we haven't been invited - understandably). So she is bowling up here within the hour, asked my daughter to help her get her little girl ready, asked if she can do a load of washing, p**s off to the party, come here to sleep and pee off again in the morning. My OH (her OH was his brother - now deceased), has OK'd all of this (without asking me) but has committed to a choral performance this evening and hasn't been here all day.
My day has comprised
getting DS organised for football
Watching the football
doing the weekly shop
organising DD to have a passport type photo taken (no easy task that, trying to find the photo booth)
Sorting out lunch
Sorting a load of washing in order to free up machine for SIL
Unpack and put away shopping
Strip and remake 2 beds
Cook tea
TIdy up room for SIL, and DS room for 2 kids
Organise bed for DS on the floor of our room
Wash up tea
Go and watch first half of choir performance as OH says he wants me to
Go to party that i now don't want to bloody go to.
:mad::mad::mad::mad:
Rant over.
No it isn't - i'm feeling used and abused at the moment, when OH sets his mind to do something (for him) then everything else goes out the window and will sulk like a 2 year old if he can't get his own way.
Tomorrow I am having a couple of hours for me which will involve face masks and hair dye and a bath full of hot water a glass full of wine and a magazine
Oh God bless my DD who has undertaken to strip and make up beds :A
As you were....I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Vjsmum - I had passport pics done at a photo shop, they took several pics digitally then advised on best one for job and printed for me. Was so much easier than a booth and cost similar amounts. But best the picture was guaranteed to be suitable meaning they would replace it if the dvla turned it down.0
